FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team opened the season Saturday night with a 3-0 win over Fresno Pacific in an exhibition game. The freshmen came up big scoring all three goals for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State took an early lead in the first period after senior Ali Sill played the ball to Kendall Van Dine into open space. Van Dine beat a defender and slipped the ball past Sunbird goalkeeper Justine Caldera.
"All three goals were nice and set up with great assists by Ali, Molly, and Krissy," said Head Coach Steve Springthorpe. "I am really happy with the way they played. Everyone got some time and was able to gain experience on the field."
In the second period the Sunbirds came alive and generated several long shots and tested the new Bulldog back line. Senior Selena Gill leads a young back line made up of sophomores Bradlee DeShane, Lauren Satterlee and freshman Danielle Solich.
"We defended alright and Chrissy had some nice saves in the first two of periods," said Springthorpe. "We need to work on staying organized and not becoming predictable on the field."
In the third period Fresno State got their rhythm back producing numerous shots on goal testing both Fresno Pacific goalkeepers.
Freshman Laura Dodd scored the second goal of the night heading in a corner kick from Molly Nizzoli putting the Bulldogs up 2-0.
"The third period produced two nice goals," said Springthorpe. "We having been working on those plays all week and they paid off."
Late in the third period the `Dogs scored off another corner kick. Krissy Looney put the ball into play and Solich headed it into the back of the net.
Fresno State begins regular season play Aug. 22 when they travel to San Francisco to take on the Dons at 5 p.m. The `Dogs will return home Aug. 24 to host UC Davis at 1 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
