Bulldogs Host Longtime Rival Spartans Saturday
Fresno State continues league play as San Jose State visits the Save Mart Center for a Western Athletic Conference contest on Saturday, January 10, 2008 at 7 p.m. This marks the second of a two-game homestand to start conference action and is the longest break between games for the Bulldogs scheduled during the season. Fresno State is 7-8 on the season and looking for its first WAC win of the year.
About the Spartans
San Jose State University enters the week 6-6 on the season and dropped its first two WAC games at home against Louisiana Tech (66-61) and New Mexico State (75-73). The Spartans go on the road for an away game at Boise State (Jan. 8) before heading to Fresno. Head Coach George Nessmen is in his fourth year guiding the Spartans and holds a career record of 30-75. The Spartans are led by a couple of Division I Pacific-10 transfers as sophomore guard Adrian Oliver (Washington) leads the team with 19.6 ppg in only five games while senior forward Tim Pierce (Arizona State) sports 16.9 ppg and 6.8 rpg. San Jose State was picked to finish fourth in the conference by the coaches and sixth by the media during the 2008-09 preseason polls.
Against the Spartans
Fresno State leads the overall series with San Jose State, 76-70. The `Dogs have only competed against the University of Pacific more than San Jose State in the history of the program. The Bulldogs defeated the Spartans in the school's last meeting 75-58 in Fresno as the `Dogs have won two of the last three contests and 19 of the past 22 non-vacated games between the schools.
LAST WEEK: `Dogs Win OT Thriller, Drop WAC Opener
Freshman point guard Bryce Cartwright broke out for a career-high 20 points while hitting 8 of 9 from the field and connecting on all three 3-pointers as Fresno State beat the Cal Poly Mustangs 90-87 in an overtime thriller on the road. Senior swing guard Dwight O'Neil delivered a clutch 20 points as freshman guards Mychal Ladd and Paul George were also critical to the Bulldogs clawing their way back into the game as Ladd netted 17 and George added 16. George also had 10 rebounds for his fourth career double-double. Junior forward Sylvester Seay recorded his first Bulldog double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. In the week's second game, George led Fresno State with 15 points and 11 rebounds (fifth career double-double) as he again shot 50% from the field (7-14) during their WAC opening loss to New Mexico State, 79-66. Seay also reached double figures with 13 points while grabbing nine rebounds. Fresno State leads the conference in blocks and recorded four on the night, with three swats by Seay and one by George. Seay is atop the league with 25 blocks on the year and averages 1.67 per game for a spot in the WAC's Top 5.
`Dogs Top Conference in Attendance, Blocks and 3-Pointers
Entering the week, Fresno State paces the WAC in blocked shots (4.73 per game) and home attendance (8,693 per game). Freshman guard Paul George leads the conference in 3-point field goal percentage by hitting 31 of 64 three-point attempts while the Bulldogs are second in the league in 3-pointers made (7.33 per game). Junior forward Sylvester Seay is fifth in the WAC with 1.67 blocks per game. Senior guard Dwight O'Neil is fourth in the WAC with 5.33 assists per game. Fresno State is on track to once again lead the WAC in attendance for the sixth straight season.
