FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team began preparation for the 2009 season with its first official practice on Wednesday at Bulldog Diamond. The team began with a 10 a.m. practice and went till 4:45 p.m. with an hour lunch break in between.
"I think it went really well today," said head coach Margie Wright. "We haven't been together since the week before finals, but I think everyone came out and did a really good job today. It's a long day having to do double days and it was cold, but I was very impressed with how they stayed with it and worked really hard."
All 18 members of the team which includes seven newcomers, the reigning WAC Freshman and Pitcher of the Year and two senior stars began the day with a half of a mile run on the nearby track. They then returned to the Diamond where they warmed up with some easy throwing practice followed by some outfield drills and infield drills.
"It was good to come out and work hard," said freshman Jody Badorine. "It was a lot more intense then my high school practices. We don't mess around we just get things done. This season I'm looking forward to just playing with the girls and winning."
The afternoon practice consisted of pitching practice and some base running. The team concluded practice by taking batting practice in the cages and on the field.
"It's awesome to be back and it was good to get on the field," sophomore catcher Caitlin Stiglich said. "I can't wait for the season to start. We are going to be really good this year."
The softball team will continue double-day practices the rest of the week and allow media at tomorrow's afternoon practice. The season officially starts on Feb. 6 as the Bulldogs take on Wisconsin at 5:30 p.m. at the Cathedral City Kick-Off.
