FRESNO, Calif. - With three players finishing among the Top 15 and outstanding senior Hali Coppin shooting 1-under par for the final round, the Bulldog women's golf team wrapped up the fall portion of the schedule with their best finish of the year.
The Dogs tied Baylor for fourth place in the team standings with a score of (298-297-299) 894. Fresno State shot all three rounds under 300, one of only three teams in the field to accomplish that. It was the best finish in a large field tournament since placing second in the 20-team Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Phoenix in April. The Dogs placed third at the 2009 WAC Championships in Reno, Nevada.
Idaho won the tournament with an 871, seven shots better than UC-Irvine. The Dogs finished the tournament five shots ahead of Arizona. Christine Wong of San Diego State won the individual title with a three-day total of 69-68-69--206, 10-under par.
Coppin finished a solid tournament with her best round of the fall, a 71, which tied the lowest score of her Fresno State career. Her tournament scoring average of 72.67 was more than five shots better than her season average entering the tournament.
She was three shots out of third place. Coppin is a returning All-America Scholar and one of the top student-athletes on the Fresno State campus.
Louisa Lies also posted her best round of the season on the second day with a 71, five shots better than any round of the year. Lies and Lindi Cobarrubias both tied for 14th place with scores of 223.
Chelsea Czinki posted a score of 232 to tie for 55th place and Pia Escandon shot a 76 Wednesday to finished tied for 81st place at 240. Escandon had a hole-in-one on a 150-yard par-3 hole.
"We are pleased to finish the fall season on such a strong note," said head coach Angie Cates-Moore, who has twice been selected the WAC Coach of the Year. "Hali played great today. She was very steady and hit 13 greens in regulation, which was a key to her strong round. We have something to build on for the spring."
"We are Your Team" The Bulldog women's golf team concluded its fall schedule. Up next is the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford Feb. 14-15, 2010.
