FRESNO, Calif. - Claudia Cardenas struck again for the Fresno State women's soccer team against Boise State with her fifth goal of the season, but the Broncos came away with the win, 2-1. The Bulldogs are 3-3 in WAC play and have an overall mark of 5-11.
"In many ways this was the best we played all year," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "We were passing the ball, controlling it and the skill level was very sharp. The bottom line is that we fell asleep on the details in two instances and a team with decent players is going to take advantage of that and they did."
Boise State got on the board first in the 23rd minute. The Broncos got a free kick that was played into Chelsea Robinson. Robinson deflected the ball to Kaylea Perenon who scored the goal giving the Broncos the lead, 1-0.
In the 44th minute, the Broncos increased their lead, 2-0 with an unassisted goal from Ashley Watson. Watson fought through a scramble in front of the box and hit the upper right corner of the goal. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel ended the half with one save.
The Bulldogs rocketed off three shots in the first half to the Broncos four shots.
Heading into the halftime break Boise State led, 2-0.
The Bulldogs rifled off four shots in a row at Boise State goalkeeper Liz Ruiz. Claudia Cardenas, Laura Dodd and Callie Hancock caused a scramble in the box that resulted in four close attempts and a shot that hit the cross bar.
"We've worked really hard all year on offensive pressure and getting into dangerous situations," said Zwaschka. "In the end if you don't have the finishing touch it allows teams to hang around. I thought our pressure was tremendous and we had our opportunities. Credit to their goalkeeper for making a couple of nice saves."
Freshman Bianca Lopez dribbled up field past four Bronco players to continue putting pressure on Boise State. Hancock made a great move through a Bronco defenders legs and took a shot on goal.
With eight second remaining on the clock Cardenas scored her fifth goal of the season. Nicole Duff played a ball through to Cardenas who put the ball past the Bronco goalkeeper.
The Bulldogs outshot the Broncos, 16-6. Cardenas led the team with four shots against Boise State.
Revel finished the game with three saves.
