FRESNO, Calif. - The defense came up huge for the Fresno State women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel broke the all-time career shutout record while defender Bianca Lopez scored her first goal to propel the Bulldogs to their sixth win of the season. The Bulldogs beat Idaho, 1-0, improving to 4-3 in WAC and 6-11 overall.
"We started out really poised. We were passing well and showing a lot of comfort supporting each other," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "You could sense that we were bound to score and it was great to get an early goal. It allowed us to be more in control of the rest of the match. Credit goes to Idaho for really pressing and causing us some problems in the second half when they were looking for the equalizer. On top of that, credit to our team for being resilient."
Fresno State celebrated senior day Sunday afternoon. The bulldogs honored Lauren West the one senior of the 2009 season. West helped the `Dogs win two WAC championships and earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
"Lauren (West) has been a tremendous leader even though unfortunately, she has been playing catch up trying to get healthy," said Zwaschka. "It has been great to see her in training. It has never stopped her from being a great leader and encouraging. She is an excellent advocate for the program and what we are trying to achieve."
The Bulldogs welcomed the Clovis Junior Soccer League for the annual CJSL day at Bulldog Stadium. The soccer club formed a tunnel for the team to run through during pregame. They also got scrimmage during the half time.
The Bulldogs took an early, 1-0, lead six minutes into the game as freshman Bianca Lopez scored her first career goal. Junior Bradlee DeShane earned the assist after she took a shot that was deflected by the Idaho goalkeeper and Lopez knocked the ball into the lower left corner passed Anna Sandman.
"It was fun to score a goal because I am from here, so I have a lot of family that come support me," said Lopez. "So it was cool for them to see that. And I got moved into the backline, so we don't get as many opportunities as a forward or midfielder would."
"It's great. We have been encouraging her and Kendall (VanDine) all year to not be concerned with sitting back," said Zwaschka. "But rather play freely and get involved in the attack. Even though it was from a set piece the fact that she got forward to make the goal is great."
The assist is the first one of the season for DeShane. The `Dogs are outshot Idaho, 8-6 in the first half and goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel had three saves.
Fresno State headed into Half time with the lead, 1-0, over the Vandals.
The second half was scoreless for both teams, but the Bulldogs continued to put the pressure on the Vandals.
"The team has been defending really well," said Zwaschka. "The difference between this game and other games is the idea that we conceded goals and had to play catch up. The fact that we got on the board early allowed us to show our defensive resilience, that we are organized and can achieve a shutout."
The `Dogs outshot the Vandals, 16-12, with nine shots on goal. Claudia Cardenas and Janna Sadowitz lead the team with three shots each.
Also contributing shots for the Bulldogs was DeShane, Kendall VanDine, Laura Dodd, Vanessa Gonzalez, Alex Jensen, Bianca Lopez and Callie Hancock.
The shutout by Revel is her fourth of the season. She has 24 career shutouts and now holds the record for most career shutouts in Fresno State history.
"It is definitely big to get the shutout," said Revel. "We've had a lot of games that we could have had the shutout, but we are happy with it. You can never be mad about a shutout. I think it's awesome to have the record. I am proud of myself, the team and the coaches."
