FRESNO, Calif. - In the WAC regular season finale, Callie Hancock scored her second goal of the season for the Fresno State women's soccer team, but the Spartans won the match, 2-1. The freshman has two goals, two assists and 40 shots in her first season as a Bulldog. The `Dogs finished the season 4-4 in WAC and 6-12 overall heading into the WAC Tournament next weekend.
"We played well and we were good with our possessions," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "We were not as dangerous as we needed to be. San Jose State had an early counter attack on what was off one of our free kicks. They had a good individual effort from Roxy Kamal, she took a long range shot and caught us by surprise. We were the better team in the first half."
The Spartans jumped ahead, 1-0, in the third minute of the match. Katie Bonadies sent a through ball to Roxy Kamal, who chipped it over goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel. Kamal has seven goals on the season and Bonadies earned the assist on the play.
Both teams had five shots a piece in the first half of play. Sophomore Molly Nizzoli had the first shot of the game for the Bulldogs.
San Jose State led, 1-0, at halftime.
The Spartans added to their lead in the 63rd minute. Emmy Belding scored her 10th goal of the season. Kamal passed the ball to Belding, who scored giving San Jose State the lead, 2-0.
In the 65th minute, the Bulldogs answered with a goal from Hancock. She got a break away, cut inside and shot the ball passed the goalkeeper Nina Butera.
"In the second half they came out, played hard and protected their lead," said Zwaschka. "We got caught on quick transition, but worked hard to get back in the game. Callie (Hancock) had a really nice goal and it was great to see her get on the board, she has been putting in great effort."
The Bulldogs had eight shots in the second half, but the Spartans outshot the `Dogs, 16-13.
Hancock led the team with five shots and Kendall VanDine had three shots. Also contributing to the offensive attack was Alex Jensen, Vanessa Gonzalez, Claudia Cardenas, Laura Dodd and Nizzoli.
Hancock leads the team in shots this season with 40. Hancock and Nizzoli both had shots on goal.
"We had several late chances, but ultimately couldn't find the net," said Zwaschka. "I am pleased with how we battled to stay in it and had San Jose State on the ropes more and more as the game went on."
Revel ended the game with four saves. She has 75 saves this season and 259 career saves.
"We have played well in recent matches and this game was no exception," said Zwaschka. "We don't feel anything but positives going into the WAC tournament. We have seen the best the conference has and we feel that we have the ability to beat anyone. We just have to capitalize on situations."
