FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team earned their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon, shutting out Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 2-0, at Bulldog Soccer Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State goalkeeper Jessie Reiss was tested early, turning aside an Islander shot just one minute into the match. Aryana Martinez threatened twice in the game's opening 12 minutes, but both scoring chances were denied by the Islander goaltender.Â
Reiss and Martinez continued to lead the way throughout the first half of play. Reiss finished the opening period with two saves to keep Texas A&M-Corpus Christi off the scoreboard, while Martinez led the Bulldogs with three shots on goal.
The Bulldogs and Islanders traded chances early in the second half, but both goaltenders stood tall and kept the game level at 0-0.Â
WIth just under 30 minutes to play, captain Katie Morris opened the scoring with her first goal of the season in the 61st minute. After receiving a pass from Aniston Renovato inside the 18-yard box, Morris buried the Bulldog's first goal of the afternoon with the Islander netminder out of position.Â
Fresno State would eventually double their advantage in the 81st minute when Hayden Crotty-Romero scored her second goal of the season off a centering pass from Jinan Said into the middle of the 18-yard box as the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs' defense held strong during the final minutes with Reiss' play in net helping preserve the shutout, as Fresno State closed out the afternoon with a 2-0 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
