FRESNO, Calif. - For the first time since 2005 the Fresno State women's soccer team earned a win against Hawaii on the Islands. The Bulldogs defeated the Rainbow Wahine, 1-0, Sunday night. The `Dogs improved to an overall record of 3-8 and 1-0 in league.
Head coach Brian Zwaschka recorded his first win against a WAC opponent.
"It was tremendous to see the team pull out a great win on such an extensive trip," said Zwaschka. "The team came together with excellent focus for the match and executed according to plan. I felt a maturity about the team for 90 minutes for the first time this year. Now is the time to carry what we've learned in Hawaii to our next WAC matches."
Sophomore Laura Dodd scored the game-winning goal in the 37th minute of the match. She made a hard cross in front of the Rainbow Wahine goal and the ball bounced off a Hawaii defender into the back of the net.
It is the first goal of the season for Dodd, who finished the game with two shots. Junior Nicole Duff recorded the assist on the play. The Bulldogs tallied 10 shots with five shots on goal. Also contributing shots for the `Dogs was Molly Nizzoli, Claudia Cardenas and Callie Hancock.
Goalkeeper Chrissy Smith recorded her first collegiate shutout and had six saves. The Bulldog defense has recorded three shutouts this season. Last season Fresno State allowed only two goals against WAC opponents.
The Bulldogs return home to host New Mexico State on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
