FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team outshot New Mexico State, 15-7, but it wasn't enough as the Aggies won the first meeting of the teams, 2-0. The Bulldogs are 1-1 in conference play and have an overall record of 3-9.
"I think that defensively we played okay," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "As a team we fell asleep in the first half and were flat. It was enough to allow them (New Mexico State) into the game in terms of getting on the scoreboard and getting confident. It also allowed them the luxury to just kick the ball. Credit to them they are an absolutely hardworking team that is confident right now. They are grinding out the results and that's what they did here today because we fell asleep and were getting over confident."
In the first half the Bulldogs put the pressure on the Aggie defense. Bradlee DeShane played a through ball to Jana Sadowitz, who gave a valiant effort that fell short on the end line.
Sophomore Kendall VanDine continued the pressure by taking a shot from 30 yards out that hit the cross bar.
New Mexico State scored first in the 14th minute of the first half. Crystal Burns played a through ball to Lauren Cope who took off to goal giving the Aggies the lead, 1-0.
DeShane had three shots in the half included one that went high over the goal. VanDine contributed two shots from the defense.
The Bulldogs trail, 1-0, entering half time.
"Because we went down a goal so early it allowed them to stay compact and close to their goal," said Zwaschka. "They didn't allow us a lot of opportunities to get close to the goal and be dangerous. Again, credit goes to them for making us play into that strategy. It is good that we are getting shots, but the quality wasn't there."
The close calls continued for Fresno State in the second half. Forward Nicole Duff had an attempt that sailed over the goal.
Callie Hancock flicked the ball on with her head to Duff, but the Aggie defense broke up the play.
In the first 86th minute the Aggies scored an insurance goal after making a penalty kick. A foul was called in the box on Kaitlyn Revel that resulted in the penalty kick. Jazmin Cardoso scored the second goal.
Revel finished the game with three saves.
"In the second half we came out to play and it was tremendous," said Zwaschka. "We were trying to dig ourselves out of a hole, which is difficult against a team that is prepared to scrap along with you."
