FRESNO, Calif. - After a thrilling come from behind win over Louisiana Tech, two members of the Bulldog football team were honored Monday by the Western Athletic Conference.
Junior linebacker Ben Jacobs and sophomore kicker Kevin Goessling won the awards for top defensive player and top special teams performer, respectively.
Jacobs, a junior from Las Vegas, Nev. (Silverado HS), tied an NCAA record by forcing three fumbles in Fresno State's 30-28 win over Louisiana tech. Jacobs recovered two of the fumbles and returned one 21 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. He also had a team-high eight tackles (6 solo), including 1.5 for a loss of four yards.
Goessling, a sophomore from Placentia, Calif. (Servite HS), was perfect on kicks last week making all three field goals and all three of his extra point attempts against Louisiana Tech. Trailing 28-24 in the fourth quarter, Goessling made two field goals including the game-winner from 35 yards out with no time on the clock.
Boise State's Doug Martin was named the offensive player of the week.
Others nominated on offense: senior wide receiver Seyi Ajirotutu, Fresno State; sophomore quarterback Shane Austin, Hawai`i; and senior running back Luke Lippincott, Nevada.
Also nominated on defense: sophomore defensive lineman Shea McCellin, Boise State; senior defensive lineman Tuika Tufaga, Hawai`i; junior defensive end Ryan Coulson, Nevada; junior linebacker Pompey Festejo, San Jose State; and sophomore linebacker Bobby Wagner, Utah State.
Other special teams nominations included: junior placekicker/punter Kyle Brotzman, Boise State; and junior placekicker Ricky Drake, Nevada.
"We Are Your Team!" The Bulldog football team is heading to Illinois on Dec. 5 to wrap-up the 2009 regular season. The game will be televised in the Big Ten Network. The Bulldog Shop is having a special on Tuesday with a 30% discount because the Dogs scored 30 points in Saturday's game against Louisiana Tech.
