FRESNO, Calif. - For the sixth consecutive year a former Bulldog football players has been selected to play in the NFL Pro Bowl.
Logan Mankins, a fifth-year starting offensive guard for the New England Patriots, was named as a starter for the AFC in the Pro Bowl, the second time in the last three years he's been selected. Mankins has started every game - 79 total - in his NFL career for the Patriots after being selected in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft. The Pro Bowl is scheduled for Jan. 31, 2010 in Land Shark Stadium in Miami.
As a Bulldog, Mankins earned All-America honors twice as a left tackle and was named the 2004 team's Most Valuable Player. He's the only offensive linemen in school history to be selected MVP. He earned a starting spot for the Dogs in 2001 as a freshman, and was in charge of protecting David Carr's blind side. Mankins was a big part of an offensive team that was among the best in NCAA history. That year, Fresno State became the first school in NCAA history to produce a 4,000-yard passer (Carr), a 1,000-yard rusher (Paris Gaines) and two 1,000-yard receivers (Rodney Wright and Bernard Berrian).
As a senior, he was named All-WAC first team and second team All-American. He helped the Dogs to nine wins and a win over No. 18 Virginia in the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho.
"Logan is a perfect of example of what hard work and dedication can bring," said head coach Pat Hill. "He's a great person, has worked extremely hard, and not surprisingly has become one of the best linemen in the NFL. When it's all said and done he could be one of the best guards in the NFL in this era. We are proud of him and all of our Bulldogs playing in the NFL."
