FRESNO, Calif. - After a stellar performance at the Bronco Invitational Saturday, Sharon Ayala debuted on the 2009 track and field rankings.
Ayala, a senior thrower, marked a 63-foot toss (19.22 meters) in the weight throw to earned a rank of 16th in Division I in the US Track & Field and Cross Country Association rankings. The throw ties Rickael Roach of Southern Illinois for the No. 16 spot.
"Sharon is throwing very well," said head coach Scott Winsor. "And she's capable of throwing even further. In track and field getting into the indoor NCAAs is very difficult, so if you're not in the Top 20 you don't go. But all the indicators say she's ready to get there."
Last season Ayala set a career-best with a throw of 63-9.5 (19.44m). Should she match or exceed that mark, Ayala will be among the Top 12 and likely secure a spot at the NCAA Championships March 13-14 in College Station, Texas.
Ayala is the defending WAC champion in the weight throw and currently leads the conference by nearly four feet.
