Â
History of the West Coast Relays
The West Coast Relays began in 1927. A group of Fresno civic leaders teamed up with the Fresno State College athletic department to launch a new athletic venture, which they hoped would replace the automobile races formerly held as a feature event of the city's annual Raisin Day celebrations. The plan was for a track and field relay carnival, which they adopted the ambitious title – West Coast Relays.
Â
Hoping for success, the officials never expected the event would rank as one of the great track and field events of the world. Fresno soon became known not only as the "Raisin Capital of the World" but the place "Where World's Records Are Broken".
Â
Originally held at Ratcliffe Stadium, the West Coast Relays was a place to see the top track athletes in the West Coast. The meet officials have always strived to give the greatest possible opportunity for top performances by all competitors.
Â
Hot start to outdoor season
Fresno State junior distance runner Rhiannon Walker has been named the Mountain West Women's Track Athlete of the Week, kicking off the outdoor season with a bang. The Bulldog ran in her first career 3000m steeplechase race at the Cal Invitational last weekend. Walker won the race in a time of 10:47.62. She had the fifth-fastest time in program history, and the fastest time by a Bulldog since 2013. Her time is the second-fastest time in the Mountain West this weekend and the No. 5 time in the NCAA.
Â
The Fresno native is Fresno State's first track athlete of the week since Jewel Ash last March.
Â
In her first season as a Bulldog, transferring from Clovis Community College, Walker has already made a name for herself in the uniform. In the indoor season, she set the program record in the 5,000m. She bested the previous record by six seconds.
Â
Big throw Zoe
Zoe Yeast has been a star in her first outdoor season for the Bulldogs. After redshirting the outdoor season last year, she has finished in the Top 3 in each of her meets this spring. The Louisville transfer has just this year of eligibility remaining and is making the most of it. Last time out, she saw a personal-best mark of 60.40m/198-2 in the hammer throw at the Cal Invitational, taking third place in the field. Her throw was the ninth-furthest throw in program history.
Â
Her mark at the Cal Invitational is currently No. 15 in the NCAA.
Â
King of the Jumps
Jabari King has been steady in the long jump this season, and is fresh off of a season-best leap of 7.40m/24-3.5 to take second at the Cal Invitational last season. King has placed first or second at all three meets this spring.
Â
First go at the outdoor jumps
Fresh off of her indoor title, junior Liz Tarczy will switch gears into outdoor season. Tarczy had success in the indoor season and will look to continue that momentum into the outdoor season starting this weekend. She is slated for her first high jump competition of the outdoor season. She currently has the No. 2 mark all-time at 1.83m/6-0, set last spring. The current program record is 1.86m/6-1.25, and has been untouched since 1987.
Â
Home soil
Fresno State will host three meets in the Central Valley this season. The first will be the West Coast Relays this weekend. Fresno State will close the regular season with the Fresno State Invitational on May 1-2 before hosting the Mountain West Championships on May 14-16. All home meets will be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.
