Gowens Hits First Home Run

FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Brennan Gowens hit his first career home run against Cal Poly but it wasn't enough as No. 15 Fresno State baseball falls, 13-11, to Cal Poly.
The Bulldogs are now 2-2 on the season and previously went 2-1 in a three game series against Washington in the opening weekend of the 2009 season.
Junior transfer Matt Morse started on the mound for the Bulldog. The right-hander struck out a career-high four batters in three innings of work. Morse earned his first career start after spending two years at San Antonio College, where he threw 52 strikeouts as a sophomore.
Cal Poly scored the first run of the game off a wild pitch and took an early 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs answered by scoring their first run off a passed ball. Both Sophomores Danny Muno and Trent Soares walked. First baseman Jake Johnson grounded out as Muno and Soares advanced. Muno scored on a passed ball.
Preseason All-WAC player Steve Detwiler singled down the middle to drive in Soares giving the `Dogs the 2-1 lead.
In his fourth appearance, freshman Brennan Gowens hit a two-run home run to dead center field in the bottom of the second inning. Gowens' home run gave the Bulldogs a 4-1 edge. Gowens is the second freshman to hit a home run in 2009.
The Mustangs scored in the top of the third inning narrowing the Bulldogs lead 4-2.
In the fourth inning, right-hander Cody Kendall made his second appearance and threw three strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched.
Cal Poly regained the lead, 6-4, after scoring four runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Second baseman Isacc Vivas hit a single to right center. Soares was hit by a pitch. Preseason All-American Tom Mendonca hit a single through the right side and drove in Vivas to bring the `Dogs within one. Soares scored on a balk to tie the game 6-6.
Taylor Garrison made his second appearance pitching 2.1 innings and striking out three batters.
In the fifth inning the Mustangs took back the lead, 9-6, after scoring three runs.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to one by scoring two runs in fifth inning. Muno singled up the middle driving in Nick Hom and Gowens.
Fresno State scored another three runs to take the lead 11-9. Muno doubled to center allowing Kenny Wise and Dane McLaughlin to score. Muno scored the `Dogs final run on a Mustang throwing error.
The Mustangs scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to clinch the 13-11 win.
The Bulldogs hit the road this weekend as they take on the Oregon Ducks for a three game series. The first game is Friday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.
