FRESNO, Calif. - Angelica Adam, a freshman from Fresno, Calif., is one of the eight newcomers to head coach Margie Wright's 2009 softball team. Throughout the season, www.gobulldogs.com will sit down with each of the freshman so the fans can get a behind-the-scenes view of the new student-athletes.
Adam played at Bullard High School, along with fellow freshman Alexis Lujan and current Bulldog sophomore pitcher Ryane Petersen. She was a three-year varsity letterwinner as an outfielder and helped lead BHS to the league championship in 2008.
How did you get started playing softball?
"I started playing baseball when I was three or four with my dad. Then my dad decided that I should start playing softball with the girls so I switched when I was about 12. Ever since then I was playing travel ball and 16-and-unders."
How has the transition been from high school to college?
"I didn't think it would be this big of a jump. I'd come out and watch practices and I would sit in the stands and I thought oh I could do that, but when I came out here the first couple of weeks were hard. It was nothing like I expected. But being a freshman I'm still working to keep up but it's been good so far."
What do you hope to accomplish in your four years at Fresno State?
"I want to be on one of the teams and help that team win the World Series. I want to win that championship. I want to make sure that I am always playing to my fullest potential and make sure that all of my teammates are. Also just having fun and making sure we all enjoy it."
Who was your most influential role model growing up?
"My dad. He works really hard at everything he does and always perseveres. Growing up I just watched him do those things and wanted to model it and be like him."
Who is the best player you have ever played against on any level?
"I've always played against Ryane (Petersen) my whole life then we played together at Bullard. She always pitched against me and I always thought she was great."
Why did you choose Fresno State?
"Living in Fresno my whole life I was surrounded by what I called the Major Leagues of softball. I always wanted to play for Coach Wright. Softball is such a big deal here in Fresno. It was always a dream of mine growing up. I always wanted to play here."
What is the best advice you have ever received from a coach?
"Don't leave anything on the field."
What is your favorite Coach Wright quote?
"She always tells us to work hard."
What do you want fans to know about this team before the season starts?
"That we could win it this year and we are a serious threat."
