FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's swimming and diving team will compete against San Jose State on Saturday at noon at the Spartan's Aquatics Center for its last meet of the regular season before the WAC Championships, Feb. 25-28, in San Antonio, Texas.
"I am excited to see what we do in some events that they do not get to swim every meet," said head coach Jeanne Fleck. "The team is excited for the last tune up before the WAC Championships."
Saturday's meet will be the third and final meeting for the `Dogs and San Jose State this season before both teams meet for all the marbles at the WAC Championships. The Bulldogs kicked off the season in early October in a double dual meet against UC Santa Cruz and San Jose State, and met again in January for a second time.
San Jose State is 15-1 overall and 7-0 WAC, coming off its 15th straight dual meet victory against Nevada, while Fresno State is 0-7 following a third place finish at the Beach Cup Invitational hosted by the University of San Diego. The Bulldogs captured first place finishes and best times at the event and featured junior diver Kendra Weeks' second place finish on the 1-meter board and freshman swimmer Heidi Gjoen's first place victory in the 100 backstroke.
"The divers are eager to compete this weekend," said head diving coach Taryn Ignacio. "They've been working so hard and have learned a couple new dives. This will be good competition to prepare us for WAC Championships."
Both teams have continued to practice and train under an intensely focused program in preparation for a strong end to its first season back at the University.
"It has been such a great year we are so excited to see how fast these women are going to swim," said Fleck.
