FRESNO, Calif. - No. 21 Fresno State tied its longest winning streak of the season (three games) on Tuesday night at Bulldog Diamond by shutting out Temple in both games of the doubleheader, 1-0 and 3-0. Morgan Melloh earned the wins in both games now improving to 9-6 in the circle as the `Dogs jump to 13-8.
"We stepped it up a notch tonight," Melloh said.
Game One
The first hit of the game for Fresno State was a single by Mallory Perkins in the bottom of the third in the Bulldogs first game of the night vs. the Owls. The Bulldogs had three hits in the game off of Temple starter Katie Burdeaux.
Bulldog sophomore ace Melloh pitched a complete game shutout for her eighth win of the season, striking out 10 and allowing just three hits.
With her 10th strikeout of the game, Melloh surpassed assistant coach Marcie Green on the career strikeout list as she now has 585 in her career.
The first hit for the Owls was in the top of the fourth.
Fresno State earned its only run of the game in the sixth as shortstop Haley Gilleland led off the inning with a walk. She would steal second base, her third and fourth bases of the season, one in each game tonight. Now with 27 career steals she is tied for seventh on the Bulldog career list with Karen Tabor.
Gilleland reached third on passed ball and after a Ryane Petersen walk, Michelle Moses hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in the run from third.
Game Two
Sophomore catcher Caitlin Stiglich went 3-for-5 in the two games and a perfect 3-for-3 in game two as she had one of the three RBI's in the Bulldogs 3-0 win.
Stiglich drove in the first run in the bottom of the fifth with two outs. Gilleland would score on her single to center field for a 1-0 lead.
Fresno State extended its lead in the sixth as Moses walked to lead off the inning. Jody Badorine, who entered to pinch run, scored on a double by Lisamarie Coronado.
Fellow freshman Kaitlin Griffin pinch hit for Mallory Perkins and drove her first career RBI on her first career triple for the final run.
Mackenzie Oakes started in the circle for Fresno State, pitching four shutout innings, striking out one and allowing only one hit.
Melloh entered in the fifth and struck out two more batters on the night to pick up her second win of the evening.
The Bulldogs compiled seven hits and held Temple to just one hit in the game.
Fresno State is now 2-0 all-time vs. Temple.
"We are going to take it play-by-play, game-by-game and leave it all on the field," said head coach Margie Wright. "I'm proud of them tonight because it's hard to come off of a rivalry-like game against Cal and play a doubleheader on a school night. Mackenzie and Morgan did an excellent job in the circle keeping them scoreless and the defense played great."
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The `Dogs' travel south to the Judi Garman Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton March 12-15. The `Dogs return home to battle WAC rival San Jose State March 20-21.
