FRESNO, Calif. - With the 2009 Varsity Equestrian National Championship less than a month away, the Georgia Bulldogs, defending VENC Champions, remain the top-ranked team in the latest coaches' poll. There were few changes in the poll this week, including the No. 8 spot, where Fresno State continues to hold court.
The Bulldogs had impressive road victories of Tennessee-Martin and last weekend at SMU to close out the regular season schedule. Up next for Dogs is the 2009 Varsity Equestrian National Championships in Waco, Texas, April 16-19.
Georgia (8-3) is just two points ahead of Texas A&M at the top of the poll. The Aggies, who are 8-3 overall and have won three straight matches, received 70 points in the voting and moved up to their highest ranking of the season. Baylor, which was second in the last poll, slipped to third place with 63 points.
South Carolina remained in fourth place with 53 points. The Gamecocks have won six straight matches and been idle since a Feb. 28 win over No. 8 Fresno State.
The only other change in the poll saw Auburn and TCU switch places for fifth and sixth, respectively. The Tigers, who trailed the Horned Frogs by one point in the previous poll, have 49 points. TCU has won seven of its last eight matches and scored 40 points in this week's poll.
The four teams rounding out the poll remained in the same position: Oklahoma State (39), Fresno State (22), Kansas State (19) and New Mexico State (10). The Cowgirls are coming off an 11-9 win over No. 5 Auburn last weekend, while the Bulldogs beat SMU in an English-only event. Kansas State and New Mexico State are on two-match winning streaks.
Delaware State, South Dakota State and Tennessee-Martin each received votes in the poll.
The collegiate coaches competing under the Varsity Equestrian Championship umbrella initiated the national poll. The final poll of the season will be released April 21, 2009.
