FRESNO, Calif. -
The second day of the Club Glove WAC Championships is in the books and the `Dogs climb the leaderboard. Fresno State posted the best score of the day with a 288 to move up one spot in the team standings. The Bulldogs improved their score from Monday by 15 strokes.
The 288 total was the lowest round of the year for the Bulldogs surpassing the 291 that was shot at the CU/Heather Farr Memorial tournament in the fall. The total is also the second lowest round in Fresno State history, right behind the 287 shot at the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational during the 2006-07 season.
"I am so proud of their performance today," said coach Angie Cates-Moore. "All five players stepped it up. We have talked about peaking at the right time and today it all came together.
"This team works hard on their mental toughness and we will need to use everything we have learned for tomorrow," said Cates-Moore.
San Jose State (285-298--574/-2) still leads the pack with a 17-stroke lead. Idaho is trailing Fresno State with a 598 total.
San Jose State's Katrina Delen Briones (141) remains the individual leader after a 2-over par 74 today and leads the tournament by two strokes. San Jose State senior Erica Moston is in third after posting a 1-over par 73 today.
Freshman Louisa Lies still leads Fresno State and sits in second place after shooting a second round of 2-over par 73. Lies is 1-under par after two rounds of play and two strokes out of first place. Lies also has 27 pars for the tournament.
Both Hali Coppin and Lindi Covarrubias started the day tied for 20th but fired identical rounds of 71's to drastically move up the leaderboard to share eighth place. Their 71's were the lowest rounds of the day along with two other individuals, both competing for San Jose State. Coppin recorded four birdies and an eagle in the second round to make her move up the standings. Covarrubias posted three birdies.
Chelsea Czinski shot a 1-over par 73 in the second round to move up and share 12th place. Taylor Siebert (154/+10) finished the day tied for 22nd place.
The three-day tournament continues on Wednesday with the final-round tee times beginning at 7:25 a.m.
