Baseball Splits Doubleheader

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team was held scoreless through eight innings last night, but that wasn't the case Saturday afternoon as the Bulldog bats warmed up and connected for eight runs on 18 hits in the conference doubleheader.
Fresno State split the series with San Jose State winning the first game 8-2 and dropping the second game 2-0. The Bulldogs are 4-7 in WAC and have a 19-21 overall mark.
Two Bulldog pitchers threw complete games this weekend. Freshman Derek Benny threw his second complete game of the year a day after junior Matt Morse threw nine shutout innings. Junior Zac Bischoff threw five hitless innings in relief in the first game.
"Outstanding offensive performance in the first game," said head coach Mike Batesole. "(Zac) Bischoff's performance was really big for the bullpen and for him."
Game 1: Fresno State 8, San Jose State 2
Leadoff batter Danny Muno opened the game with a single to left field. Last night it took the Bulldogs a couple innings to get their first hit, but Saturday afternoon Muno got the first hit right out of the gate.
Left fielder Dusty Robinson walked advancing Muno to second base. Junior Alan Ahmady hit an RBI single to left field as Muno crossed home plate and Robinson advanced to second base. The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Ahmady has 150 career RBIs and is the ninth Bulldog to reach that mark. He needs two more to tie for seventh on the all-time Fresno State RBI list.
Grubb caught a Spartan runner stealing second base in the third inning. The senior has caught seven runners attempting to steal a base.
In the fourth inning, junior Steve Detwiler tripled to right center field. Grubb singled to shallow right field allowing Detwiler to come home giving the Bulldogs the 2-0 lead.
Senior Gavin Hedstrom singled to right field advancing Grubb to second base. Muno singled to center field bringing Grubb home increasing the `Dogs lead 3-0. Freshman Cody Kendall started on the hill in game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader. He struck out three in four innings.
The Bulldog infield got out of a jam in the fourth inning. With bases loaded the `Dogs allowed two runs and turned their 31nd double play of the year. Fresno State led 3-2 after four innings.
The Bulldogs held the Spartans scoreless for 13 innings as the Spartans didn't cross home plate until the fourth inning of game 2.
Ahmady opened the fifth inning with a single to the second baseman. Ahmady went 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
Ahmady moved to second base on a passed ball. Designated hitter Jake Johnson walked. Detwiler singled to left field Ahmady scored and Johnson advanced to second base. Johnson and Detwiler advanced on a wild pitch. Hedstrom doubled to left field bringing in both Johnson and Detwiler extending Fresno State's lead 6-2.
Second baseman Isacc Vivas doubled off the center field wall as Hedstrom touched home plate. The Bulldogs scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning gaining a 7-2 lead.
Zac Bischoff came in relief for the `Dogs in the fifth inning and sat down the Spartan batters 1-2-3. The junior sat down six San Jose State batters in a row. The righty worked five hitless innings.
Grubb doubled down the left field line in the seventh inning. Hedstrom singled to left field allowing Grubb to score and the `Dogs lead 8-2. Hedstrom went 3-for-5 with three RBIS and a double.
The Bulldogs win game 2 of the series 8-2 and Bischoff earns his second win of 2009.
Game 2: San Jose State 2, Fresno State 0
For the first time this weekend, San Jose State scored first in the second inning taking a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Danny Muno had the first hit of the game for Fresno State hitting a single through the right side.
Muno had the second hit of the game for the `Dogs. The shortstop singled to right field.
In the fifth inning, Trent Garrison singled to left field for the third hit in game 2. Gavin Hedstrom also singled to left field before the Spartans retired the inning.
Third baseman Tom Mendonca made a huge diving stop and then the Bulldogs turned their 33rd double play of the year to retire the inning.
Right-hander Derek Benny earned his seventh start of 2009. The freshman struck out three batters in his second complete game of the season. He sat down the Spartans 1-2-3 in the sixth inning.
San Jose added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning taking a 2-0 lead over the Bulldogs.
Mendonca snagged a line drive out of the air in the bottom of the sixth inning preventing a Spartan from reaching base.
The Spartans take game 3 by a score of 2-0.
