`Dogs Battle Roadrunners Tough

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team rallied scoring 11 runs in two innings, but fell 17-12 to Cal State Bakersfield Tuesday afternoon. The Bulldogs have an overall mark of 16-13. The `Dogs wrap up non-conference play tomorrow against CSUB before hosting New Mexico State to open WAC play.
Fresno State fans traveled south to Bakersfield for the midweek game against the Roadrunners. Bulldog red filled the Hardt field bleachers and the berm to the right of the Bulldog's dugout.
The Roadrunners got on the board first scoring two runs in the second inning giving CSUB the 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Danny Muno singled up the middle. Third baseman Tom Mendonca reached on an error and Muno advanced third base. Alan Ahmady walked to load the bases. Steve Detwiler got hit by a pitch advancing all the Bulldog runners and allowing Muno to score as the `Dogs trail 2-1.
The `Runners added two runs in the bottom of the third inning increasing their lead 4-1.
Catcher Danny Grubb reached on an error. Grubb advanced to second on a passed ball. Left Fielder Dusty Robinson walked. Freshman Brennan Gowens hit a bunt single to load the bases. Gavin Hedstrom singled to right field allowing Grubb to cross home plate and advance Robinson and Gowens.
Muno singled to left field as two Bulldogs scored tying the game at four runs apiece. Junior Tom Mendonca continued his hitting streak to 15 games with a single to right field and Hedstrom scored the go ahead run giving the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead.
Alan Ahmady continued the fourth inning rally with a three-run home run, his second of the season, to extend the `Dogs lead to 8-4.
Left-hander Josh Poytress started on the mound and struck out two batters in four innings.
CSUB tallied four runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 8-8.
In the top of the fifth inning, Hedstrom hit a stand up double to center field. Muno doubled to right center field advancing Hedstrom to third base. Mendonca flew out in center field allowing Hedstrom to score the go head run and advancing Muno to third base.
Ahmady walked. Detwiler singled to left field as Muno scored giving the Bulldogs the 10-8 lead and Ahmady advanced to second base. Both Ahmady and advanced on a passed ball. Sophomore Nick Hom singled to left field as two Bulldogs crossed home plate extending the Bulldogs lead to 12-8.
The Bulldogs got out a jam in the bottom of the fifth inning. The `Dogs infield turned a double play with the bases loaded to retire the side before the Roadrunners could score.
The Roadrunners scored three runs in the sixth inning trailing the Bulldogs 12-11. CSUB added six runs in the seventh inning giving the Roadrunners the 17-12 win. The Bulldogs and Roadrunners conclude their series tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Hardt Field.

The `Dogs return to Beiden Field April 10-13 as they host New Mexico State in the WAC opening series.
