Bulldogs Beat Sacramento State, 4-3

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team beat Sacramento State, 4-3, Friday afternoon. Senior Holden Sprague shutdown the Hornets earning his third save of the year.
"It gives us confidence going into tomorrow's doubleheader," said starting pitcher Derek Benny. "We want come in tomorrow get it done in the first game and go from there."
The `Dogs scored four runs on 11 hits and the Bulldogs are 10-12 in conference and have a 26-27 overall mark.
Designated hitter Kenny Wise got the first hit of the game with a single to right field in the second inning.
After two scoreless innings, sophomore Danny Muno started the attack with a single to right field. Left fielder Dusty Robinson singled to second base moving Muno to second base. Junior Tom Mendonca hit an RBI single to left field giving the `Dogs the lead, 1-0.
In the sixth inning, Mendonca doubled to left center field and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. First baseman Jake Johnson reached on fielder's choice as Mendonca scored and the `Dogs lead, 2-0.
Right fielder Brennan Gowens walked moving Johnson to second base. Wise singled to right field and advanced to second base on the run. Johnson was tagged out at home and Gowens advanced to third base. Senior Gavin Hedstrom hit a single to left field bringing home both Bulldog runners and Fresno State leads, 4-0.
Benny made his 10th start of the year. Benny went 7 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and earned his third win of the season. The freshman has a 3-3 record on the mound.
In the seventh inning, the Hornets scored three unearned runs trailing the `Dogs, 4-3.
Senior Holden Sprague came out of the bullpen and closed for the Bulldogs. The right-hander sat down the batters in order earning his third save and giving the Bulldogs the win, 4-3.
"It was a big win because it gives us a lot of confidence. Last week it gave us confidence and this week it gives us momentum and confidence," said Sprague. "We need to come out tomorrow with the same enthusiasm as we have the last two days. Yes we only need one, but it would be nice to get both."

"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The `Dogs close out the regular season with a trip north to battle Sacramento State Friday through Sunday. The `Dogs and Hornets play Thursday at 3, Friday at 3 pm and wrap up with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 12 pm.
