`Dogs Split Series, Honor Seniors

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team honored the three seniors, Danny Grubb, Holden Sprague and Gavin Hedstrom, who will go out as one of the most decorated senior classes in program history after winning three league and tournament championships, along with the National Championship in 2008.
The Bulldogs split the series against Hawaii after losing both games in Saturday's doubleheader, 15-10 and 15-6.
Junior Tom Mendonca hit two home runs over the weekend and now leads the WAC in home runs this season with 22.
The `Dogs are 8-12 in conference and have an overall mark of 24-27.
Game 1: Hawai'i 15, Fresno State 7
The Bulldogs rallied for four runs in the fifth inning coming with in one run of Hawai'i and rallied again in the ninth inning, but it wasn't enough as the `Dogs fell, 15-10.
The Bulldogs scored 10 runs on 11 hits and lead the series 2-1.
Hawai'i scored first in the first inning taking the lead, 2-0.
Freshman Cody Kendall started on the mound and sat down the `Bow batters in order in the second inning.
Catcher Trent Garrison and second baseman Danny Muno caught their third runner of the weekend attempting to steal second base.
In the third inning the Bulldogs cut the `Bows lead in half. Muno doubled down the right field line. Left fielder Dusty Robinson reached on a fielding error as Muno scored and the `Dogs trail, 2-1.
Hawai'i scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning increasing their lead, 7-1.
Mendonca opened the bottom of the fourth inning with a single up the middle. Mendonca stole second base. Senior Gavin Hedstrom reached on a fielder's choice as Mendonca was tagged out between second and third base. Designated hitter Kenny Wise hit a stand up double to right center field allowing Hedstrom to score and the `Dogs trail, 7-2.
Fresno State rallied for four runs in the fifth inning. Shortstop Isacc Vivas launched a solo home run over the left field wall as the Bulldogs are down four runs, 7-3. Vivas has two home runs on the season.
Muno walked. Robinson singled to left center field moving Muno to second base. First baseman Alan Ahmady hit his seventh home run of the season off the flagpole in left field giving the Bulldogs three runs trailing, 7-6.
Hawai'i added three runs in the sixth inning increasing their lead, 10-6. The `Bows scored three runs extending their lead, 13-6.
Robinson doubled down the left field line in the seventh inning. Robinson advanced to third base on a passed ball. Ahmady reached on an error as Robinson scored as the `Dogs trail, 13-7.
The `Bows scored two runs in the ninth leading, 15-7.
In the ninth inning, Muno walked. Robinson doubled to center field moving Muno to third base. Ahmady flew out in right field advancing Robinson to third base and allowing Muno to cross home plate as the `Dogs trail, 15-8.
Mendonca hit a two-run home run to bring the Bulldogs within five runs as they trail, 15-10. Mendonca has 51 career home runs and now leads the WAC in home runs this season with 22.
Hawaii hung on to earn their first win of the series, 15-10.
Game 2: Hawaii 15, Fresno State 6
Hawaii jumped ahead scoring three runs in first inning taking the lead, 3-0.
The Bulldogs answered in bottom of the first inning. Second baseman Danny Muno singled to the pitcher. Muno advanced to second base on a balk. First baseman Alan Ahmady singled through the right side allowing Muno to score trailing Hawai'i, 3-1.
Gowens singled up the middle and advanced to second base on a fielding error as Ahmady scored as the `Dogs trail, 3-2.
The `Bows scored two runs in the second inning increasing their lead, 5-2.
Catcher Trent Garrison and Muno caught their fourth runner of the series attempting to steal second base in third inning.
Junior Tom Mendonca singled to right center field to lead off the fourth inning. Freshman Brennan Gowens doubled to center field advancing Mendonca to third base. Senior Gavin Hedstrom flew out in center field allowing Mendonca to score as the Bulldogs trail, 5-3.
Designated hitter Kenny Wise tripled off the center field wall bringing in Gowens and the `Dogs within one run of Hawai'i. Senior Holden Sprague started on the hill in the nightcap.
The `Bows added three runs in the fifth inning extending their lead, 9-4.
In the fifth inning, Muno walked. Robinson doubled off the center field wall advancing Muno to third base. Ahmady grounded out allowing Muno to score as the `Dogs trail, 9-5.
The `Bows added six runs in the top of the seventh inning leading 15-5.
Pinch hitter Steve Detwiler singled up the middle. Pinch hitter Jake Johnson reached on an error moving Detwiler to second base. Ahmady grounded out to first base advancing the runners. Mendonca grounded out bringing home Detwiler as the Bulldogs trail, 15-6.
Mendonca got a standing ovation from the crowd on his walk back to the dugout.
Fresno State split the series with Hawai'i after they won the second game, 15-6.
The Bulldogs close out WAC play on the road against Sacramento State May 14-16.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The `Dogs close out the regular season with a trip North to battle Sacramento State Thursday through Saturday. The `Dogs and Hornets play single games on Thursday and Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at Noon.
