FRESNO, Calif. - The Western Athletic Conference released the Spring Academic All-WAC honorees and Fresno State baseball had seven student-athletes earn Academic All-WAC honors.
Sophomores Danny Muno and Jake Johnson, along with transfers Isacc Vivas were honored for their academic achievements by the WAC. Freshmen Trent Garrison, Brennan Gowens, Cody Kendall and Kenny Wise also received the award from the WAC.
"We impress upon all involved in our program that this is 'college baseball' not 'baseball college'," head coach Mike Batesole said. "We want our players to be winners both in their course work and on the field. These seven have taken it to another level. We are all very proud of them."
Student-athletes are required to obtain at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, compete in at least 50 percent of season contests and complete at least one academic year in order to earn All-WAC honors.
Muno earned numerous awards from the WAC in 2009. The second baseman was named First Team All-WAC, WAC All-Tournament team and now Academic All-WAC. Muno was one of two players to start every game in 2009. He led the team with a .379 batting average and 25 doubles.
Johnson split time playing catcher and first base for the Bulldogs. He hit his first career grand slam against Louisiana Tech on April 19. He hit the game-winning single against San Jose State and hit two doubles in the 2009 NCAA Regional game against UC Irvine.
Vivas hit .225 with seven doubles, a triple and three home runs. The short stop went 8-for-13 (.615) against Sacramento State and was named WAC Hitter of the Week on May 18.
Gowens hit 12 doubles, five home runs and recorded 27 RBIs. The right fielder hit .280 and tallied 53 hits and 46 runs during his freshman season.
Garrison started 25 games as the catcher in his freshman campaign and caught 13 runners attempting to steal second base. He hit .219 with six doubles and 12 RBIs.
Kendall started six games on the mound and appeared in 18. He had a 2-0 record striking out 26 batters. The righty recorded a 9.21 ERA in 43 innings pitched.
Wise led the team in triples with three. The designated hitter also recorded nine doubles, six home runs and 28 RBIs. Wise had a batting average of .291 and stole six bases.
