FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team finished the first road trip of the 2009 season in Long Beach, Calif. The Bulldogs lost, 2-0, to Long Beach State. The `Dogs are now 0-2 this season.
"We grew this weekend," said head coach Brian Zwaschka."We faced two very good teams with a lot of game-changing options. We handled the pressure thrown at us quite well once we got passed the initial nerves. The team conceded two losses but we are not discouraged as we battled, competed, and stood up to two of the toughest teams we'll face right out of the gates."
In the 12th minute of play the 49ers capitalized on a corner kick as Lindsey Bullock headed the ball into the goal off a kick from Shawna Gordon.
Long Beach State scored again in the second half of the match. Gordon scored off a corner kick that slipped through goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel's hands in the left corner of the goal.
Revel recorded six saves against the 49ers and has 11 saves on the season.
Freshman Callie Hancock leads the team with three shots on the season. She got off one shot against Long Beach State. The Bulldogs fired six shots on goalkeeper Emily Kingsborough. Megan Ashjian, Kendall VanDine and Rachel Pickett all got shots off.
Krissy Looney and Laura Dodd came off the bench and recorded a shot each. The 49ers outshot the Bulldogs, 15-6.
Fresno State returns home to host Oregon on Aug. 30 at noon at Bulldog Stadium for the home opener.
