FRESNO, Calif. - Each day was better than the previous one for the Bulldog women's golf team.
Head coach Angie Cates-Moore's squad started the 2009 Washington State Inland Cup in a tie for ninth place, and two rounds later cut 19 strokes off its first round score and improved to a tie for fifth place.
"This is a new course, it's only two-years old, and it's a very challenging golf course," said Cates-Moore. "We had wind every day, which we are not used to, and for the second straight tournament we got off to a bad start and dug too big a hole to get out of. We are so close to putting together a good tournament. We are looking forward to next week."
The Bulldogs had a three-day total of 933 to tie Pac-10 school Oregon State, both one shot back of Gonzaga in fourth place. Fresno State shot a final round of 304, the third-best round of the day, just two shots behind team champion Idaho, which shot a 302.
Fresno State beat host Washington State, the alma mater of Cates-Moore, by eight strokes in the tournament, 12 shots on the final round.
Hali Coppin had the best round for the Dogs today with a 1-over par 73. She had three birdies and 12 pars on her round. She started the final round tied for 18th and nearly made the top 10, finishing in a tie for 12th place.
Louisa Lies and Lindi Covarrubias each played well, posting scores of 75 and 76, respectively. Lies had her best round of the tournament and played her final nine holes at 1-under par. Lies improved 10 positions to tie for 21st place.
Covarrubias was solid throughout and worked her way up to a tie for sixth in the final standings. For the tournament, she posted six birdies and 33 pars out of 72 holes.
"Lindi has put together two good tournaments back-to-back," said Cates-Moore. "She was close to a top three (finish) in a big tournament. She's had one bad round, but is really close to putting it all together."
Shaylee Yano and Chelsea Czinski posted scores of 80 and 81, respectively.
"We had three players player really well today and if we can have a decent fourth score, we could break 300 and were close," said Cates-Moore. "Overall it was a good finish and we are seeing a lot of improvement. The team is working hard in reaching their goals. We are looking forward to going to Colorado to put the pieces together."
