RUSTON, La. - The Fresno State women's soccer team increased its unbeaten streak to six games after beating Idaho 3-0 in the first round of the 2010 WAC Tournament. The Bulldogs are 8-8-4 on the season and play Utah State tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in the second round of the tournament.
"The team is very confident right now and was excited to come here and play," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "We're feeling good with everyone being healthy and everyone contributing on a high level. Today was a great team effort and an excellent way to kick off the tournament."
Freshman Tara Boynton had the first shot of the game. She beat an Idaho defender taking a shot on Liz Boyden, who came up with the save.
The Bulldogs gained control of the match early on in the first half. Fresno State possessed the ball in Idaho territory most of the half making it difficult for the Vandals to clear the ball.
Senior Bradlee DeShane took a shot from 20-yards out and hit the upper right corner for a goal giving the `Dogs the lead 1-0. DeShane has three goals on the year and scored the game-winning goal against Idaho last weekend. Boynton and Lauren Lindstrom earned assists on the play.
In the 14th minute, Claudia Cardenas scored off a corner kick from Krissy Looney increasing the `Dogs lead to 2-0. Cardenas has four goals on the season and Looney recorded her third assist of the season on the play.
"We know we are capable of scoring goals and our attack has gotten significantly better," said Zwaschka. "I specifically challenged the team to make all that work come to fruition and it was great to see them get on the board the way we did."
Idaho recorded its first and only shot of the half 24 minutes in and Kaitlyn Revel picked up the save.
The Bulldogs continues to dominate possession of the ball and pressure the Vandal goal with shots from DeShane, Cardenas, Boynton, Lindstrom, Vanessa Gonzalez and Nicole Duff in the first 45 minutes of play.
The pressure continued with back-to-back shots that hit the post from Megan Ashjian and Janna Sadowitz. The Bulldogs outshot the Vandals 11-1 in the first half.
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead into the half time break.
In the second half, the Bulldogs continue to pressure up field looking for their third goal of the game.
Sadowitz beat a Vandal defender and took a shot from 10-yards out missing just high of the goal.
In the 71st minute, Sadowitz played a ball into Duff, who turned and took a shot from 5-yards out. Her shot hit the back of the net for the Bulldogs third goal of the match. The second-team All-WAC selection leads the team with six goals this season. Sadowitz recorded her second assist of the year on the play.
Freshman Megan Mossman recorded two shots late in the game for the Bulldogs. She had a shot one versus one with the goalkeeper that went just wide of the Idaho goal.
"We have to play both sides of the ball," said Zwaschka. "Idaho has a good team that we worked hard to stifle. It's a credit to our defensive organization with every player contributing."
Revel, a first-team All-WAC selection, recorded her six shutout of the season and had three saves. The `Dogs defense limited the Vandals to eight shots, while Fresno State had 22 shots which is one shot shy of tying its season-high of 23. Cardenas led the team in shots with four.
"We Are Your Team!" The Bulldogs continue WAC Tournament action on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 10:30 a.m. against no. 2 seed Utah State. The final match of the tournament is Sunday, Nov. 7. Watch live streaming at WACsports.org or follow the game on gametracker.
