FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldog women's golf team usually starts the spring schedule by hosting its' only home tournament of the season, however this season head coach Angie Cates-Moore wanted to get her team on the course in tournament competition prior to the home event. While she picked one of the west coast's toughest tournaments on a difficult golf course, she has no regrets.
Fresno State finished 11th at the Peg Barnard Invitational hosted by Stanford University on the campus near Palo Alto, Calif.
"Any golfer knows the first time out you have to knock a little of the rust of your game," said Cates-Moore. "I knew this would be a tough test but I have no regrets. We needed this and I know this tournament and this experience will help us down the road, especially as we get ready to host our home tournament in two weeks."
The Dogs posted as final round score of 321, three-shots better than Saturday's first round.
Chelsea Czinksi shot an 81 for a two-round total of 160 to tie for 39th place, one stroke better than senior Hali Coppin, who had a 79-82--161.
Senior Pia Escandon led the Dogs Sunday with a 76, a 14-stroke improvement over her first round. Only 14 players in the tournament score better.
She tied with teammates Lindi Covarrubias and Louisa Lies for 50th place. "Pia played great today," said Cates Moore. "After her first round, she really bounced back and it was great to see her play so well. Things just really clicked for her today."
No. 25 Stanford edged rival No. 21 Cal for the team title, 596-597. They were the only two teams under 600 for the tournament.
The Bulldogs have two weeks to prepare for the 2010 Fresno State Lexus Classic.
"We are Your Team!" Up next for the Dogs is the 2010 Fresno State Lexus Classic at Copper River Country Club March 1-2.
