Dogs Climbing ESPN Mid-Major Polls
After entering the ESPN.com Mid-Major Top 10 poll last week in eighth place, the Fresno State women's basketball team has moved up two spots to No. 6. ESPN.com women's basketball writer Graham Hays does the poll. Here is what he had to say. 6. Fresno State (20-5, 11-0 WAC):
"Here's how Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins made his case recently: "If you flipped and put our name on Arizona State's stats or UCLA's stats and changed the names, I think you'd be amazed at what you'd think about our team." He has a point. The lack of a signature win hurts in raising the profile, but the Bulldogs played Stanford close into the second half and acquitted themselves well on the road at TCU and USC without guard Emma Andrews early on. The next hurdle comes with Nevada, second in the WAC, at home on Saturday, followed by trips to Louisiana Tech and Boise State in the week that follows."
Winning Big
The Bulldogs are out scoring conference teams by an average score of 75.1 to 55.5 in WAC play. Overall on the season, the average margin of victory is 71.9 to 59.7. The 85-38 win over Idaho on Feb.10 was the largest margin of victory over a WAC opponent. The Bulldogs have also recorded a 41 point win over Hawaii and a 37-point win at San Jose State. The 41 point win was the third largest margin of victory in a WAC game. Earlier in the season the Bulldogs beat Sacramento State by 48 points. The Bulldogs have six wins by 20 points or more this season.
And the Winner Is....
Jaleesa Ross earned WAC Player of the Week honors for the third time this season when she received the award on Feb. 15 for averaging 19.5 points a game, six rebounds, 5.5 assists and three steals in wins over Idaho and New Mexico State. She also earned the award on January 25 and she became the first Bulldog to be named WAC Player of the Week for the 2009-10 season when she earned the accolade on Dec. 7 for performances where she averaged 17 point and 10 rebounds in wins at UC Irvine and Loyola Marymount. Ross has earned WAC Player of the Week honors six times in her career.
