FRESNO, Calif. - Two of Fresno State's strengths this season carried the day in a dual meet win over Stanford at the Student Horse Center on campus.
The Bulldogs dominated the Cardinal in Equitation over Fence and Western Horsemanship, winning seven of nine matches in those two events, en route to a 10-8 victory.
The Bulldogs are ranked No. 10 in this week's national equestrian coaches' poll.
"I'm very pleased," said Dr. Becky Malmo, whose team has won consecutive home matches. "I knew Stanford would be very solid in the English events and they proved that. I hope this will inspire them to want to take the next step and compete on the varsity level."
Several Dogs shined in equitation over fences, winning four of five matches, led by seniors Lisa Well and Jennifer Jory. Wells had a score of 80 for the Dogs to beat her opponent by 50 points, while Jory posted a 78 to defeat Stanford's KC Simon, an accomplished and versatile rider.
Wells won her sixth match of the season, most on the team. She's only lost one match.
Holly Elsbernd had Fresno State's highest score, an 82, to defeat Rachel Kolb. Also earning a win for the Bulldogs was Marisa Mohn, who had a 72.
Fresno State won three of four matches in Western Horsemanship led by Madison Silver, Christa Beezley and Sammie Jo Stone, who all earned wins.
Silver had the highest score for the Dogs with a 74.5. She's won five of her seven rides this season. Stone also has five wins on the season.
Fresno State's only win in Equitation on the Flat came from Kimmie Steinbuch, who was selected MVP with a score of 67. She defeated Stanford's Simon 67-50.
Lisa Beach earned a tied against Sarah Scharf with a score of 43.
The Bulldogs and Cardinal split in reining, each team winning two matches. Earning wins for the Dogs were senor captain Keri Blackledge, who had the highest score of the competition with a 72.5, and sophomore Shawna McClurg. McClurg has won four of her six matches on the season, including the last three.
"Having these two matches to start the year has been a big help," said Malmo. "It lets us know where our holes are and will really help us for the Best in the West in a couple weeks. I'm pleased with where our team is right now."
Up next, the Dogs host the Best in the West Tournament at the Student Horse Center Feb. 20-21.
