FRESNO, Calif. - It was bound to happen. Bulldog sophomore Louisa Lies is just too talented to keep her off the medal podium. Lies won her first career college tournament at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Hawaii.
Lies (66-76-74--216) went wire to wire after opening with a tournament low of 66. Her three round score of 216 is right up there with former winners of this event Anika Sorenstam of Arizona, who shot a 212 in 1992, and Natalie Gulbis, who carded a 216 in 2001. Lies was the only player to shoot par for the tournament, winning the event by five strokes.
"We are very excited about Louisa and her strong tournament," said head coach Angie Cates-Moore, a two-time WAC Coach of the Year. "She's been so close to winning a couple times in the last year and each of those experiences helped her today. I think we will see a lot of great golf from her in the future."
Fresno State (305-304-301--910) placed fourth, just six strokes behind leader Rollins in the 17-team field. Fresno State finished 12 shots ahead of Nevada, which was fifth place. Fresno State has five Top 5 finishes this season.
"I'm not thrilled with a fourth place finish," said Cates-Moore of the team's performance. "I really felt like we could win this tournament coming in. We had some consistent scores but not like we are capable of shooting. We can build on this, though. We'll come home and get a few days off and feed of this and Louisa's win and I know that will help us as we prepare for the Irvine tournament."
Chelsea Czinski played another solid round with a 77 and tied for 19th place, her best tournament of the season.
Senior Hali Coppin moved up 22 spots to finish tied for 24th after a round of 74, while Maria Pia Escandon (89-76-82--238) and Lindi Covarrubias (79-83-76--238) tied for 42nd place. Covarrubias moved up 13 spots with a solid third round.
After tournaments each of the last three weeks, the Bulldogs take a break before returning to action at the end of the month. The Dogs have one more tournament before the 2010 WAC Championships, April 19-21 in Mesa, Arizona.
"We are Your Team!" The Dogs are off until March 29-30 when they compete in the 2010 Anteater Invitational at UC Irvine.
