`Dogs Rally Past LMU

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team rallied for seven runs in the seventh inning to win the final game of the series against LMU, 16-10. The Bulldogs improved to 10-10 on the season.
The `Dogs trailed through the first four innings before rallying for a combined five runs in the fifth and sixth innings taking the lead. The Lions battled back regaining the lead, but in the seventh inning the Bulldogs erupted for seven runs sealing the win.
Fresno State tallied 19 hits and scored 16 runs against the Lions. Four Bulldogs including, Brennan Gowens, Jordan Ribera, Dusty Robinson and Bobby Coyle each had three hits apiece.
The Lions took the lead in the first inning scoring one run. LMU added three runs in the second innings increasing their lead, 4-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, Coyle singled to center field. Outfielder Steve Detwiler doubled down the left field line moving Coyle to third base. Shortstop Isacc Vivas hit an RBI single to second base as the `Dogs trail, 4-1.
Loyola Marymount hit a solo home run over the left center wall increasing the lead, 5-1.
Robinson singled to second base to jump start the third inning. Ribera followed with a double down the right field line bringing home Robinson cutting the lead, 5-2.
LMU scored again in the top of the fourth inning continuing to lead, 6-2.
Coyle led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a stand up double to left field. Detwiler reached base after getting hit by a pitch. The Bulldogs grounded into a double play moving Coyle to third base. Danny Muno kept the inning alive after getting walked. Muno stole second base, his x of the season.
With two runners in scoring position, Gowens singled to second base. He advanced to second base on a throwing error. Both runners scored on the play and the Bulldogs trail, 6-4.
Sophomore Josh Poytress got the starting nod from head coach Mike Batesole Sunday afternoon, his fifth start of the year. The lefty sat down the batters in order in the fifth inning. Poytress struck out two LMU batters in five innings pitched.
In the fifth inning, Ribera launched a home run to left field hitting the storage shed just passed the wall as the Bulldogs trail, 6-5.
Catcher Trent Garrison singled to center field. Third baseman Garret Weber grounded out moving Garrison to second base. Coyle doubled down the right field line allowing Garrison to score tying the game, 6-6.
Detwiler hit in the go ahead run with a single through the right side. The Bulldogs take their first lead of the game, 7-6.
In the sixth inning, Cody Kendall came out of the bullpen for the Bulldogs. The right-hander struck out two batters in two innings and earned the win.
Gowens started the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to center field. Robinson hit a ground rule double over the right field wall bringing home Gowens and increasing the `Dogs lead, 8-6.
Ribera hit an RBI single up the middle bringing home Robinson extending the Bulldogs lead, 9-6.
Loyola Marymount scored four runs in the seventh inning taking back the lead, 10-9.
Vivas started the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk. Muno singled over the third baseman to the grass along the left field line moving Vivas to second base. Gowens walked to load the bases. Robinson grounded out allowing Vivas to score tying the game, 10-10.
Ribera was intentionally walked to load the bases again. Garrison hit a sacrifice fly to center field advancing the runners and bringing home Muno as the `Dogs regain the lead, 11-10.
Weber hit a double down the right line to allowing to runners to cross home plate and extend the Bulldogs lead, 13-10.
Coyle reached on an error moving Weber to third base. Coyle stole second base. Detwiler walked to load the bases. The Bulldog runners advanced on a wild pitch and Weber scored on the play as the `Dogs lead, 14-10.
Vivas doubled to left field allowing Coyle and Detwiler to score increasing the Bulldogs lead, 16-10.
Sean Bonesteele came in as the closer in the eighth inning and pitched the last two innings striking out an LMU batter.
The Bulldogs won the final game of the series, 16-10.
