`Dogs Sweep UCSB

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Fresno State bats came out on fire in the final non-conference doubleheader of the season for the Bulldog softball team. The `Dogs won game one 5-4 and then picked up a 9-1 victory in five innings in game two over UC Santa Barbara at the Campus Diamond on Tuesday afternoon.
Game One
Haley Gilleland led off the first with a single to right field and extended her hitting streak to 14. Andrea Ortega followed with a single up the middle. A single by Caitlin Stiglich to left drove in both runners for a 2-0 lead.
The `Dogs got two more runs in the second to take a 4-0 lead. It started with a single by Becca Walker to left center with one out. She scored on single by Ortega. Gilleland was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Michelle Moses to right field.
Lindsey Correa started in the circle for UCSB and left after the 3.0 innings. She allowed four runs on eight hits. MeLinda Matsumoto entered in relief and picked up the loss while allowing one run on seven hits in 4.0 innings.
UCSB got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with singles by Keilani Jennings single and Kelly McDonald to tie the game at 4-4.
Mackenzie Oakes entered to replace starting Bulldog pitcher Moses. Moses went 4.1 innings and allowed four runs on four hits, three earned with three strikeouts.
The `Dogs took the lead in the top of the sixth after Ortega scored on a single by Stiglich for the 5-4 final score.
Oakes allowed one hit in 2.2 innings and picked up her ninth win of the season.
Fresno State had 15 hits in the game, led by Ortega with four. She reached in all five of her at bats.
Game Two
The `Dogs came out swinging for the second-straight game to win game two 9-1 in five innings and the series. Oakes got her second win in two games, allowing just one run on six hits in 5.0 innings.
Gilleland and Ortega had back-to-back hits to lead off the game. Moses singled to left to drive in Gilleland for 1-0 lead. Gilleland extended her hitting streak to 15 games, just two shy of her career-high.
Nicole Angene hit a single to lead off the second inning. Jody Badorine was hit by pitch and both scored on base hit to left by Ortega.
UCSB got its only run of the game in the second inning.
The `Dogs exploded for their final six runs of the game in the third inning. The inning began when Stiglich reached on an error. Angene got her second single of the game to right field. A single to center field by Walker scored pinch runner Kaylan Pollard.
A three-run home run by Brooke Phipps to right field made the score7-1.
Ortega reached on an error and Moses hit a two-run home run to right field for a 9-1 lead. It was the 10th home run of the season for Moses.
The `Dogs are now 23-12 on the year while UCSB is 9-22. Matsumoto got the loss for the Gauchos.
Ortega reached base four times in game two and nine times on the day. The `Dogs had 25 hits in the two games.
"I thought we did a really good job hitting today," said head coach Margie Wright. "25 hits on the day is pretty good and Michelle and Mackenzie did a great job pitching."
