FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team improved to an impressive 13-2 at home this season as the Bulldogs handed the Boise State Broncos their first loss in Western Athletic Conference play Friday night at Bulldog Diamond.
The win moves the `Dogs to 24-12 on the season and a tie for first in the conference standings at 3-1. The loss for the Broncos drops them to 13-20 and 3-1 in the WAC. The two teams will battle for the series on Saturday in a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. Fresno State is 5-0 now all-time against Boise State.
"I thought we played pretty well," said head coach Margie Wright. "We jumped on them right away which was good. We had good pitching and good defense so I'm pretty pleased."
The `Dogs got all of their runs in the first two innings off of Bronco starter Allie Crump. Crump allowed five runs on six hits. Lela Work entered in relief for the Broncos and shut the `Dogs down, allowing just three hits in 5.0 innings.
Haley Gilleland walked to lead off the first inning and Andrea Ortega follow with a single to left. Both scored on a three-run home run by Michelle Moses to give the `Dogs a 3-0 lead. It was the 11th home run of the season for Moses, putting her in 11th place in a single season in the Bulldog record books. She now has 21 in her young Bulldog career and is ranked eighth all-time.
"I hit that home run on the first pitch and it felt amazing," Moses said.
Brooke Phipps added the fourth run to the board in the second with her second home run of the season to left field.
Gilleland got a hit in the second to extend her hitting streak to 16 games, a WAC best and just one shy of tying her personal best. An Ortega single to left drove in Gilleland for a 5-0 lead.
The `Dogs had five runs on nine hits while Moses held the Broncos to just three hits in her seven innings pitched in the circle. Moses picked up her fifth win of the season and tied a career-high with 12 strikeouts.
