SAN DIEGO - On day one of the San Diego Classic, the No. 22/21 Fresno State softball team went 1-1 with a 3-1 win over Wisconsin and a tough 5-4 loss to No. 5/5 UCLA at the University of San Diego Softball Complex on Friday afternoon.
The `Dogs are now 10-5 on the year and will face UTEP and San Diego State at the San Diego State Softball Complex on Saturday with game one scheduled for 9 a.m. and game two at 2 p.m. Live stats and audio are available at www.gobulldogs.com for free for both games.
Game One
After four scoreless innings of play, the `Dogs got on the board vs. Wisconsin after Lisamarie Coronado led off the fifth inning with a base hit. Nicole Angene then drew a walk as Diane Runge and Kaylan Pollard entered to pinch run. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch by the Badger starting pitcher Letty Olivarez.
A sacrifice fly by Bulldog starting pitcher Morgan Melloh drove in Runge and then a base hit by Haley Gilleland allowed Pollard to score for a 2-0 lead.
Wisconsin got within one with a run off of Melloh in the sixth but the `Dogs rallied for an insurance run in the seventh as another base hit by Gilleland drove in Angene for the 3-1 win.
The `Dogs had a total of seven hits off of Olivarez and picked up their 10th win of the year. Caitlin Stiglich also had two hits in the game.
Melloh improved to 6-3 on the year as she allowed just one run on six hits and added nine strikeouts.
"I was very proud of how our team played after the last two games in the Palm Springs tournament," head coach Margie Wright said. "I thought they played extremely well against Wisconsin. We got very timely hitting and Morgan pitched a great game and really got out of some tough spots."
Game Two
In a battle of top 25 teams, the `Dogs and Bruins were scoreless through three innings with good pitching from Fresno State's Mackenzie Oakes and UCLA's Donna Kerr.
After UCLA left a runner on third base in each of the first three innings, they struck first in the fourth inning as Sam Camuso scored off of a base hit by Dani Yudin. The Bruins got one more run in the inning and took a 2-0 lead.
Courtney Moore got her second hit of the game in the fourth with a double. After Michelle Moses was hit by a pitch, a triple to right center by Andrea Ortega tied the game. Ortega scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Kerr.
UCLA re-took the lead in the fifth with a single and then a triple to give them the 4-3 lead.
Melloh entered to replace Oakes in the fifth. Oakes went 4.1 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits. Melloh pitched 2.2 innings allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.
The `Dogs got one back in the bottom of the seventh as Coronado started it off with a one-out double off of Aleah Macon. A base hit by Melloh to center field drove in Coronado.
"It was a disappointing loss to UCLA because we gave them several runs but I think it was a good measure for us," Wright added.
