`Dogs Sweep Utah State

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team picked up two victories on Saturday at Bulldog Diamond over Utah State to take the series 3-0. Fresno State won game one 7-3 and took game two, 4-1. The `Dogs are 28-13 overall and 7-2 in WAC play.
Utah State drops to 14-20 and 3-7. The `Dogs are currently in second place by themselves in the conference standings. Hawai'i leads the league at 11-0.
"We just have to worry about ourselves," said head coach Margie Wright. "Everyone knows what we need to do. After the last two series we felt like we let one slip away and we knew we needed to get three this weekend."
Game One
Haley Gilleland reached on an error to lead off the Bulldogs half of the first inning. She stole second base, the 48th of her career.
Andrea Ortega hit her second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field to put the `Dogs on top 2-0.
Courtney Moore was hit by a pitch and reached second on a single to left by Caitlin Stiglich.
After a single by Michelle Moses in the third, Courtney Moore hit her fifth home run of the season to put the `Dogs up 4-0.
In the same inning, Lisamarie Coronado reached on an error. Nicole Angele singled in the next at bat and then a double by Becca Walker drove both in as the `Dogs went up 6-0.
Utah State got on the board in the fourth after a triple by Joreigh Landers and a single by Kali Cancelosi. Two more runs came in for the Aggies with a double by Shasta Tyteca and a single by Megan McDonald. The score was 6-3 after three and a half.
In the bottom of the fourth, Aggie starting pitcher Shelbi Tyteca was replaced by Mandy Harmon. Shelbi Tyteca allowed six runs on six hits in 3.0 innings. Three of the runs were earned.
Gilleland singled to lead off the fourth and picked up her second stolen base of the game. A single by Ortega drove Gilleland in for the seventh Bulldog run.
Morgan Melloh got the win, improving to 11-8 on the season. She allowed three runs on four hits, only two runs were earned. She had two walks and eight strikeouts in the game.
Shelbi Tyteca got the loss and is now 1-2 on the season for the Aggies.
Game Two
Utah State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two as Nicole Tindall scored after reaching on a fielder's choice and an error.
Gilleland singled to lead off the sixth and stole second. She now needs one to tie Witt's school record. She reached third base on an error by the catcher.
Gilleland scored to tie the game with a single to left by Moore after a walk to Moses. Stiglich reached on an error and Moses scored on ground out by Coronado to put the `Dogs up 2-1.
A double by Angene drove in two more as Fresno State scored four runs in the sixth and went up 4-1.
With one out and no outs in the top of the seventh, Moses moved from first base to pitch in relief for Mackenzie Oakes. Oakes allowed one unearned run on five hits in 6.0 innings. She improves to 11-5 in the circle and had four strikeouts. Moses picked up her second career save and second in two weeks. She had two strikeouts in 1.0 inning.
The `Dogs had six hits, led by Stiglich and Angene with two each.
Kate Greenough was the losing pitching for Utah State. She allowed four runs, one earned in 6.0 innings on six hits.
