`Dogs Split, Muno Walks into Bulldog History

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team split the doubleheader against Louisiana Tech Saturday. The Bulldogs dropped the first game, 13-5 before coming back to win the second game, 14-4. The `Dogs are 21-16 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
The `Dogs hit four home runs in the second game and tallied a total of 26 hits in the two games. Sophomore Brennan Gowens went 6-for-8 with four RBIs.
Danny Muno went 4-for-6 and four walks Saturday. In the fourth inning of the first game, he recorded his 145th walk and broke Fresno State's all-time walk record, a record previously set by Greg Funk from 1980-83. In the series, so far, Muno has recorded seven walks in three games and has a total of 148 career walks.
Game One: Louisiana Tech 13, Fresno State 5
Louisiana Tech scored early taking a 2-0 lead. In the second inning, outfielder Steve Detwiler kept a LA Tech runner from scoring after throwing him out at home plate from right center field.
The Bulldogs opened the fourth inning with a pair of walks. Third baseman Justin Charles knocked down the second hit of the afternoon driving in a run and the `Dogs trail, 2-1.
Matt Morse started on the hill in the first game on Saturday. The senior struck out two and threw four scoreless innings.
In the fifth inning, first baseman Jordan Ribera reached second base on a fielding error. Sophomore Brennan Gowens drove in the tying run with a double down the left field line.
Detwiler gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the weekend with a two-run home run over the left field wall.
LA Tech regained the lead 7-4 after scoring five runs in the sixth inning.
The Bulldogs retired the sixth inning with a double play. Fresno State has turned 44 double plays this season and are among the top teams in the nation in fielding double plays.
Louisiana Tech added another run with an RBI single. Catcher Trent Garrison caught the runner attempting to steal second base. Garrison has caught 11 runners at second base this season.
Ribera led off the eighth inning with a walk. Dusty Robinson followed with a single moving Ribera to third base. Gowens singled to left field allowing Ribera to score and the `Dogs trail, 11-5.
LA Tech scored two runs in the ninth inning and won the game, 13-5.
Game Two: Fresno State 14, Louisiana Tech 4
Louisiana Tech scored first in the nightcap taking a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs answered with three runs taking the lead, 4-1. Muno led off the inning with a double. Gowens followed with an RBI triple driving in the tying run. Coyle smashed a two-run home run to right field and two batters later Robinson hit a home run of his own.
The `Dogs increased their lead with a home run from designated hitter Kenny Wise. Fresno State hit three home runs in the first two innings of the game.
Louisiana Tech scored in the third inning cutting the Bulldogs lead, 5-2.
Coming off a no-hitter performance against Hawai'i, National player of the Week Greg Gonzalez was outstanding on the mound in his second start of the season. The junior struck out a career-high 10 batters and limited LA Tech to three runs.
Gonzalez threw four scoreless innings and his second complete game of the season. He is 5-0 after picking up the win over Louisiana Tech.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Wise led off with a single through the right side. Vivas bunted Wise to second base. Muno recorded a walk to put another runner on base for the Bulldogs. Wise advanced to third base on a throwing error and then Muno stole second base. Coyle hit an RBI single extending the Bulldogs lead, 6-2.
LA Tech hit a solo home run cutting the lead, 6-3.
Senior Isacc Vivas hit the fourth home run of the night for the Bulldogs in the sixth inning as the `Dogs lead, 7-3.
Fresno State recorded five hits in the sixth inning for an eight run rally giving the `Dogs their largest lead of the night. Muno saw his x walk of the night. Gowens singled through the right side moving Muno to third base. Coyle hit a base knock to center field allowing a run to cross home plate extending the lead, 8-3.
Ribera kept the hitting streak alive with a double down the left field line driving in run increasing the `Dogs lead, 9-3. The Bulldog runners advanced on a balk a run scored increasing the lead, 10-3.
Robinson walked to continue the sixth inning. Garrison singled up the middle advancing the runners increasing the lead, 11-3.
A fielding error by the LA Tech third baseman allowed Weber to reach base and keep the rally going. A passed ball moved the runners along and Bulldogs lead, 12-3.
Another fielding error allowed Vivas to get on base for the second time in the inning and pinch runner Trent Soares scored the 13th run of the game. Gowens reached on a fielder's choice that brought in the final run of the inning. The Bulldogs led 14-3 after a huge rally in the sixth inning.
The Bulldogs won the nightcap, 14-4. Louisiana Tech leads the series, 2-1.
