'Dogs Take Series from Rival Spartans

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Fresno State softball squad continues to chase the 2010 WAC title and with a series win over rival San Jose State, the Dogs hold on firmly to second place in the league standings.
The Bulldogs split a double-header on Saturday and won the three-game series 2-1. The Bulldogs improved their all-time record against the rival Spartans to 76-7.
The first game was dominated by Michelle Moses and Morgan Melloh.
Moses provided the firepower at the plate with a pair of home runs and she drove in all four runs while Melloh hurled a three-hit shutout and struck out 11 Spartans in the 4-0 victory.
Moses got the scoring going early for the Dogs with a solo homerun with two outs in the top of the first inning.
The Dogs added three more in the sixth when Haley Gilleland and Andrea Ortega had back to back singles, which allowed Moses to hit a three-run shot over the outfield fence for her 15th homer of the season and 25th of her career.
Melloh improved to 12-7 on the season and faced just 27 batters in the game.
Gilleland, who had three hits in the game, also stole a base, the 13th this year and 51st of her brilliant career. She tied former Bulldog great Becky Witt for most career stolen bases.
The win was the 30th of the season for the Dogs and sixth in a row.
The Dogs dropped the second game of the series 1-0. Fresno State had eight hits with Ortega and Lisamarie Coronado coming up with two each.
Fresno State's pitching duo of Mackenzie Oakes and Moses allowed just one run on five hits.
San Jose State's only run came in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Cheryl Freitas.
Oakes(11-6) struck out four Spartans and took the loss.
The Dogs (30-14, 9-3 WAC) were flawless in the field with no errors in the double header.
"We Are Your Team!" The Bulldogs host New Mexico State next weekend in a three-game WAC series at Bulldog Diamond. The Dogs and Aggies play Friday at 6 p.m. and then a double-header Saturday at 1 p.m. Tickets are available.
