Gilleland Breaks Stolen Base Record

FRESNO, Calif. - A solo home run by junior third baseman Nicole Angene in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Bulldog softball team to a 4-3 win over New Mexico State in game one of the three-game Western Athletic Conference series at Bulldog Diamond Friday night.
"It was a great way to end it," said had coach Margie Wright of Angene's home run. "We had a couple of miscue's but it was good to see Nicole step up."
The `Dogs improve to 31-14 overall and 10-3 in league play while NMSU drops to 21-22 and 2-11.
Morgan Melloh got the win in the circle to improve to 13-8 on the year and a perfect 4-0 in WAC play. She had two strikeouts in 1.1 innings. Torrey Schroeder got the loss for the Aggies, falling to 8-9. She allowed two runs on three hits in 3.2 innings.
The `Dogs never trailed in the game and had 10 hits while three Bulldog pitchers allowed just four. Haley Gilleland, Courtney Moore, Caitlin Stiglich and Angene each had two hits on the night. A total of 16 Bulldogs saw game action.
The night was also highlighted by a Gilleland stolen base in the sixth, the 52nd of her career to break Becky Witt's all-time school record.
"It's something I've worked hard on," Gilleland said of the record.
The first Bulldog run came in the second inning after Schroeder gave up back-to-back walks to Stiglich and Lisamarie Coronado. An Angene single off of Aggie pitcher Alex Newman loaded the bases.
A two-out single by Gilleland drove in Stiglich for a 1-0 lead.
A one-out walk to Andrea Ortega in the fifth, followed by a single down the right field line by Michelle Moses put runners on the corners for the `Dogs. A single to the shortstop by Moore drove in Gilleland.
A Stiglich deep single to center field drove in pinch runner Jody Badorine for the second run of the inning.
The Aggies got two runs in the sixth, both unearned, after Kylie Randall reached on an error and Tiare Jennings hit a two-run home run to cut the lead to 3-2 off of Bulldog starter Moses. Moses allowed three runs on three hits, only one earned in 6.1 innings.
Angie Ortega tied the game for the Aggies in the top of the seventh with a solo home run to left center field.
With one out, Mackenzie Oakes entered to replace Moses in the circle. Oakes allowed one hit and one walk.
Melloh entered with two outs and two on in the seventh to face Randall and struck her out on three pitches.
