FRESNO, Calif. - Playing in her favorite event of the year, senior Hali Coppin shot an opening round of 74 and stands two shots off the lead at the 2010 WAC Championships in Mesa, Ariz. Coppin's round has put the Dogs in contention for the WAC team title after the first day of competition at the Longbow Golf Club. Fresno State (306) is in third place, just one stroke behind second-place Hawaii and two strokes behind leader San Jose State.
"Hali played great today and put herself in great position to contend for the championship," said head coach Angie Cates-Moore. "She loves the WAC championship, it's her favorite event, and she really likes this course so she's got a good vibe going right now."
Coppin, who posted two birdies in her final four holes of the round, is one of three Dogs in the Top 10. She joins fellow seniors Lindi Covarrubias and Maria Pia Escandon, who both shot 77 on the round just five strokes off the lead. The tournament is being played in Covarrubias' hometown. Escandon shot a 1-under par round of 35 on the back nine with a pair of birdies.
Chelsea Czinksi carded a 77 in a round that included two birdies. Fresno State's top player, Louisa Lies, who placed second in the WAC tournament last season as a freshman is tied for 20th after an opening round of 79. She made 11 pars on her round, but suffered a double bogey on her first hole and a triple on No. 17.
Idaho trails the Bulldogs by two strokes after shooting a 308, followed by Boise State (311), New Mexico State (312) and Nevada (324).
Hawaii's Erika Lundberg shot a 1-over par 72 to lead the tournament.
"We are in good position right now," said Cates-Moore. "We didn't play our best golf today but are in position where we can go out tomorrow and put up some good scores and climb the leader board. We did hit the ball pretty well today and I would look for some lower numbers from our team tomorrow."
The Dogs will tee-off beginning at 8:50 a.m. PT Tuesday morning and will play in the leaders pairing with San Jose State and Hawaii.
"We are Your Team!" The Bulldog women's golf team continues play in the 2010 WAC Championships at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona on Tuesday. The event concludes on Wednesday. Follow the tournament via live scoring on GOLFSTAT
