`Dogs Beat Cal Poly, 7-5

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team earned their second victory over Cal Poly in 2010 after beating the Mustangs, 7-5, Tuesday night. The Bulldogs have won their last four games and are 17-12 this season.
The `Dogs saw five lead changes in the mid week game before scoring three runs in the fifth inning to take command of the game.
Fresno State out hit Cal Poly 12 to nine and recorded three doubles. Third baseman Garrett Weber went 3-for-4 against the Mustangs with two RBIs.
The pitching staff combined for six strikeouts and threw five scoreless innings against Cal Poly.
Josh Poytress earned his eighth start of the season and sat down the batters 1-2-3 in first inning.
Cal Poly scored first taking an early lead, 1-0, in the first inning.
Sophomore Charlie Robertson took over in relief in the second inning. In the fourth inning, he sat the batters down in order.
In the second inning, Dusty Robinson walked. Weber bunted down the third baseline to move Robinson to second. Steve Detwiler reached on a fielder's choice and Weber was tagged out on the play, but Robinson advanced to third base. Catcher Austin Wynns singled to right field bringing in Robinson tying the game, 1-1.
Shortstop Isacc Vivas brought in the go ahead run with a single to shallow center field and the Bulldogs lead, 2-1.
The Mustangs regained the lead after scoring two runs in the top of the third inning.
Outfielder Brennan Gowens singled to left center field to start the bottom of the third inning. He advanced on a wild pitch. Designated hitter Bobby Coyle singled to left field driving in Gowens tying the game, 3-3.
Robinson saw his second walk of the game moving Coyle to second base. Weber singled through the left side allowing the go ahead run to cross home plate and the `Dogs lead, 4-3.
Cody Kendall came out of the bullpen in the fifth inning. The sophomore sat down the last six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings. He earned the win and improved to 3-3 on the season.
Cal Poly tied the game at four runs a piece after scoring a run in the fourth inning.
In the fifth inning, Robinson doubled down the left field line. Weber followed with a single to right field moving Robinson to second base. The runners advanced a base on an error by the right fielder allowing Robinson to score and the `Dogs take back the lead, 5-4.
Detwiler doubled to left center field bringing Weber increasing the Bulldogs lead, 6-4. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 7-4 after Vivas hit a double off the left field wall allowing Detwiler to score.
The Bulldogs retired the top of the sixth inning by turning their 38th double play of the year.
Left-handed pitcher Tom Harlan came in to the game in the ninth inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced.
Cal Poly added a run in the ninth inning closing in on the Bulldogs. Junior Gene Escat struck a Mustang batter for the final out of the game and earned the save after the `Dogs won, 7-5.
