`Dogs Hand Hawai'i First WAC Loss

HONOLULU - The Bulldogs did something no other Western Athletic Conference team had done this season Saturday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium by taking game one of the doubleheader against No. 23 Hawai'i. Fresno State took game one 9-7 and fell in a tight game two 5-4.
Fresno State is 34-16 overall and 13-5 in the WAC while Hawai'i is now 41-12 and 19-1.
Game One
Morgan Melloh got the win in game one to improve to a 15-8 on the year and a perfect 6-0 in WAC play. She had eight strikeouts in the game and now has 1,100 in her career. Melloh allowed seven runs, six earned, on 13 hits in 7.0 innings.
Kelly Majam got a base hit to lead off the first for Hawai'i and scored on a two-run home run by Melissa Gonzalez as the Rainbow Wahine got on the board first. A double by Kanani Pu'u-Warren drove in Alex Aguirre and a single by Amanda Tauali'i gave UH a 5-0 lead.
The first hit of the game for the `Dogs was a blooper over pitcher Kaia Parnaby's head from Lisamarie Coronado in the second inning.
Hawai'i got its sixth run in the second inning with an RBI triple by Jenna Rodriguez.
The `Dogs got on the board in the third with back-to-back solo home runs by Andrea Ortega and Michelle Moses to cut the lead to 6-2. It was the 17th of the season for Moses and the 28th of her career as she tied Jenna Cervantez all-time for sixth place. It was the third home run of the season for Ortega.
Brooke Phipps walked to lead off the fifth and Haley Gilleland hit an infield single. Moses reached on a fielder's choice and with two outs a grand slam by Caitlin Stiglich tied the game at 6-6. It was the fourth home run of the season for the Bulldog catcher and her third career grand slam.
Hawai'i threatened in the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded and two outs but two Melloh strikeouts got the `Dogs out of the jam.
The Rainbow Wahine took the lead in the sixth after pinch runner Tasha Pagdilao scored from second on a single by Pu'u-Warren.
The `Dogs took the lead for good with the second home run of the game for Stiglich, a three run bomb to center field to put her team up 9-7 in the top of the seventh. Moses and Jody Badorine both scored after singles by Moses and Courtney Moore. Badorine was a pinch runner.
Parnaby got the loss for UH as she allowed nine runs on eight hits with 10 strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
Moses and Stiglich each had two hits for the `Dogs.
Game Two
Hawai'i struck first in game two with an unearned run scored by Aguirre in the second inning off of Bulldog starter Mackenzie Oakes.
The home team got its second unearned run of the game in the second inning when Kelly Majam scored.
The first hit of the game for the `Dogs was a double by Ortega to lead off the fourth inning. A single by Moses drove her in to get the `Dogs to within one. Courtney Moore singled up the middle and the two runners advanced on wild pitch by Stephanie Ricketts. A walk to Stiglich loaded the bases. A two-out single by Diane Runge tied the game at 2-2.
After a Traci Yoshikawa single in the fifth, a Majam double off the top of the left field wall put Hawai'i back on top 3-2. A single by Jenna Rodriquez added another for a 4-2 score.
Moses singled in the sixth and eventually scored on a wild pitch to get the `Dogs within one, 4-3.
A solo home run by Brooke Phipps tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh with two outs.
Jessica Iwata won the game with a solo home run to left center in the seventh for Hawai'i.
Melloh entered in the fifth with two outs for the `Dogs in the circle replacing Oakes. Oakes allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits with two strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Melloh allowed one run on one hit in 1.2 innings and got the loss.
Ricketts improved to 22-6 after allowing four runs on six hits in 7.0 innings.
