Bulldogs Advance in WAC Tournament

MESA, Ariz. - The No. 1 seed Fresno State baseball team won its first game of the WAC tournament after beating San Jose State 12-10 Thursday night. The Bulldogs improve to 17-1 in WAC Tournament games since 2006. The `Dogs have an overall record of 36-23 this season.
The WAC regular season champions face Hawai'i in the third round of the Tournament on Friday, MAy 28 at 7:30 p.m.
Center fielder Brennan Gowens had an outstanding night at the plate for the Bulldogs. The sophomore went 4-for-4 with six RBIs and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
The Spartans attacked first early in the game hitting a two-run blast to left field taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Dusty Robinson got aboard with a walk. Bobby Coyle singled to right field moving Robinson to third base. Garrett Weber loaded the bases with a walk. Gowens singled to center field driving in two runs to tie the game 2-2.
Senior Steve Detwiler drove in the go ahead run giving the Bulldogs their first lead of the night 3-2.
Starting pitcher Greg Gonzalez struck out a pair in the second inning and left a Spartan stranded on third base.
In the third inning, Gowens drove in his third run of the night with an RBI double to center field extending the `Dogs lead 4-2.
Weber extended his hit streak to 17 games with a double down the left field line in the fifth inning that moved Ribera to third base. Weber's hit streak is the longest hitting streak on the team in 2010. Gowens cleared the bases after connecting for a three-run homer to left center field increasing the `Dogs lead 7-2.
Third baseman Isacc Vivas continued the fifth inning rally with an RBI triple to right field. The Bulldogs take the lead 8-2 heading into the sixth inning.
Gonzalez threw six and third innings striking out four batters. The junior threw four scoreless innings against San Jose State and earned his eighth win of the season.
San Jose State added a run in the sixth inning as they trail the Bulldogs 8-3. Weber drove in the Bulldogs ninth run of the ball game with a single to right field. The `Dogs took a 9-3 lead into the seventh inning.
The Spartans rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning and continued to trial the Bulldogs 9-7.
Matt Morse entered the game retiring the first batter he faced and left the bases loaded with Spartans. The senior struck a Spartan out looking to end the top of the eighth inning. Morse struck out two batters in two and third innings and earned his second save of the year.
Gowens led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single, his fourth hit of the night. Gowens moved to second base on an error by the catcher and a sacrifice fly from Trent Garrison drove in Gowens increasing the `Dogs lead 10-7.
In the eighth inning, Robinson launched a two-run home run giving the Bulldogs the advantage 12-7.
The Spartans rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning, but the Bulldogs held on to win 12-10 advancing to the next round of the tournament.
