Bulldogs Battle in Championship Game

MESA, Ariz. - The Fresno State baseball team battled through their third elimination game in two days, but fell to Hawai'i 9-6 in the championship game. The Bulldogs are the 2010 WAC regular season champions and finish the year with an overall record of 38-25.
Four Bulldogs earned WAC All-Tournament team honors after making it to the championship game Sunday. Bobby Coyle, Brennan Gowens, Danny Muno and Jordan Ribera all earned a spot on the all-tournament team after stellar performances over the last week in Mesa, Ariz.
Ribera, Steve Detwiler and Trent Garrison each had two hits a piece against Hawai'i. The Bulldogs had a total of 10 hits.
Fresno State will have to wait until the selection show to see if the Bulldogs recieve an at-large bid into the tournament. The selection show is Monday, May 31 at 9:30 a.m. PT on ESPN HD.
A solo home run to center field gave Hawai'i an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the second inning taking the lead. WAC Player of the Year Jordan Ribera led off the inning with a double to right field. Sophomore Brennan Gowens moved Ribera over with a single to left field. Junior Garrett Weber drove in the tying run with an RBI single to center field.
A single from Trent Garrison drove in Gowens giving the `Dogs their first lead of the game 2-1.
The Rainbows scored four runs in the second inning taking back the lead 5-2.
Danny Muno opened the third inning with a walk and advanced two bases to third on two wild pitches. Bobby Coyle drove in Muno with a sacrifice fly to left field and the `Dogs trail 5-3.
In his 13th relief appearance, Greg Gonzalez struck out a pair in the third inning and kept the `Bows offense silent for an inning. The junior threw two innings and struck out two.
Senior Sean Bonesteele took over on the mound in the fourth inning and stranded a pair of Rainbow runners. He threw two and two-thirds innings of relief for the Bulldogs.
Hawai'i scored two runs in the sixth inning adding to their lead 7-3.
In the seventh inning, senior Steve Detwiler led off the inning with a single. Pinch hitter Isacc Vivas followed with a walk. Muno reached on an error that allowed Detwiler to score and the `Dogs trail 7-4.
Lefty Tom Harlan retired the bottom of the seventh inning in order and kept the Rainbows from adding any runs to their lead.
In the top of the eighth inning back-to-back errors put runners on base for Fresno State. Detwiler hit a triple down the right field line bringing in two runs and the `Dogs trail 7-6.
The `Bows scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning increasing their lead 9-6.
Hawai'i held on to win the championship game 9-6 and become the 2010 WAC Tournament champions.
