FRESNO, Calif. - Think about the career of a Bulldog softball player. They commit four years of hard work and dedication to the sport they love. In these years they spend countless hours under the sun, play in numerous games encompassing many innings, so much sweat, smiles, tears, and memories. And at the end of every career there comes a night when they are honored for their dedication as a Bulldog.
The Fresno State softball team will honor its two seniors Saturday, May 8 at Bulldog Diamond. Outfielders Lisamarie Coronado and Brooke Phipps will be in the spotlight on their own senior day before game one of the doubleheader vs. LA Tech at 1 p.m.
Coronado is a right-hander from Hemet, Calif., and has played all four of her collegiate softball years at Fresno State.
Last year at the WAC Tournament Coronado helped the `Dogs to a perfect 3-0 record and their third-straight WAC title. At Bulldog Diamond she had five hits and two RBIs. Her performance earned her the honor of being named to the 2009 WAC All-Tournament team.
A personal highlight for Coronado was when she robbed Hawai'i of a home run over the fence in the beginning of her career. Along with that moment she will remember her teammates and all their times together.
"It's crazy that it's really coming to an end," Coronado said. "These four years have just flown by."
The criminology major with an emphasis in victimology, will graduate in December. She then plans to move home and find a job in her area of study and forever cherish her years as a Bulldog softball player.
Originally from Corona, Calif., Phipps has played all her softball years at Fresno State, as well.
A highlight in her career was being named the WAC Player of the Week last year, along with earning Toyota/gobulldogs.com Student-Athlete of the Week honors. The honor came after the Bulldog's series against Boise State when she hit a WAC-best .692 (9-of-13) with two home runs and seven RBIs.
Another honor for Phipps was being named captain by softball head coach Margie Wright.
"It means a lot to me to be chosen as a captain," Phipps said. "It's an honor to know the team and coaches view me as a leader."
But it is not just on the field accomplishments, moments and honors that will be remembered most.
"Looking back I will remember all the time spent with the girls, especially laughing hysterically on bus rides and road trips," Phipps added.
Phipps will graduate this May with a degree in communication. She plans on moving south, somewhere closer to home and finding a job.
Both Phipps and Coronado are leading their team in their final campaigns as Bulldog softball players. It will be the last innings for these two to play at Bulldog Diamond and the last games before the WAC Tournament, where they will seek to fight for a fourth WAC Tournament title.
"We have so much pride being a part of a community that has supported us so well," said Phipps and Coronado agreed. And it is support and honor they will receive on their senior day at Bulldog Diamond.
"We are Your Team!" - Bulldog softball hosts Louisiana Tech Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday will be a double header. Senior day will take place before the first game at 1p.m. and another game will follow at 3 p.m. For more information be sure to check out GoBulldogs.com.
