FRESNO, Calif. - Former Fresno State Bulldog Richard Marshall is currently in his sixth NFL season and first year with the Arizona Cardinals.
GoBulldogs.com recently sat down with the defensive back to talk to him about his experiences in the NFL and at Fresno State...
GoBulldogs.com: You are in your sixth NFL season since being selected in the second round of the 2006 draft. What is the key to having a lengthy NFL career?
Richard Marshall: "First believing in God because without him none of this would be possible. Second having a loving family to support me and the last thing is hard work and dedication."
GoBulldogs.com: You have 16 career interceptions in the NFL and recorded nine in three seasons at Fresno State. What is your key to picking off a pass?
Richard Marshall: "Studying film so that you can play fast and treating the ball like it's yours when it's in the air. Oh yeah, and you got to catch the ball."
GoBulldogs.com: You signed as a free agent with the Arizona Cardinals this past summer. What is free agency like? Is it an exciting time, taxing, or complicated time trying to decide on what team you want to play for and what team wants to sign you?
Richard Marshall: "This year free agency was a little different because of the lockout, but it was stressful waiting to see where you would go and how fast it moved after the lockout was lifted."
GoBulldogs.com: You played in your first career postseason game in 2008. How much does a playoff game differ from a regular season game?
Richard Marshall: "It's a lot different than the regular season because it feels like the game speeds up a bit from regular season to post season."
GoBulldogs.com: In 2004, you set a program record with 205 return yards off of your three interceptions to lead the 'Dogs to a 9-3 record. Then the next season you led the team in tackles while guiding Fresno State to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. How much fun did you have in those seasons?
Richard Marshall: "I had a lot of fun those years. We beat a lot of big-name schools and had fun doing it. It was the attitude we had on the field that led us to victory. I had a lot of fun playing for Fresno State and I will never forget those times."
GoBulldogs.com: When you were coming out of high school in Los Angeles, why did you choose to attend Fresno State?
Richard Marshall: "I felt comfortable with the coaching staff when I came out of high school and also at the time Fresno State was national ranked."
GoBulldogs.com: What do you enjoy doing in your free time away from football?
Richard Marshall: "I love bowling and being at home playing with my twin boys."
GoBulldogs.com: How have you enjoyed living in the Phoenix area after spending several years in Charlotte, N.C.?
Richard Marshall: "I love it in Phoenix, the weather is great and it's close to home (Los Angeles)."
GoBulldogs.com: Is there one wide receiver in the league you enjoy going up against the most?
Richard Marshall: "I enjoyed going up against one of my former teammates (Steve Smith, Carolina Panthers) in practice because he made me a better football player."
GoBulldogs.com: What were some of your favorite things about Fresno?
Richard Marshall: "The community and fans. Bulldog fans are the best college fans in the world. I also miss playing football with my old teammates, playing in the NFL is not the same as college. The NFL is a business."
