Bulldogs Hang 9-Under in Hawai'i

FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Nate Jessup demolished his previous low round of 73 by dropping a 7-under 65 on the final day of competition at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Hawai'i. The Bulldogs (293-288-279--860) finished the three day tournament in seventh place at 4-under, seven strokes ahead of eighth place Arizona.
The Dogs shot a final round 9-under on the 6712-yard, par-72 George Fazio Course at the Turtle Bay Resort on the island of O'ahu, their lowest round of the tournament.
Jessup (79-72-65--216) played a bogey-free final round filled with seven birdies, tying him with Will Collins of Virginia for the lowest score on the day. He also tied Junior Brian Sunker for the lowest round of the year by a Bulldog. Jessup's even-par overall bumped him up 21 spots for a tie of 28th.
Senior Bryan Hogan (73-73-69--215) claimed the best final score for the Bulldogs at 1-under, giving him his first finish under-par this year. Hogan also carded his lowest round of the year with a 3-under 69, which came by way of six birdies.
Junior Bhavik Patel (71-74-72-217) shot even-par Thursday and ended the tournament at 1-over. Sunker (77-69-73--219), who shot 11 birdies over the last two days, closed 3-over and senior Michael Gideon (72-74-75--221) finished at 5-over.
No. 23 Cal (283-274-277--834, -30) cruised to the winner's circle by recording an 11-under Friday, finishing six shots ahead of No. 10 Texas A&M (-24). Rounding out the top five was No. 17 Virginia (-18), New Mexico (-12) and Nevada (-10). New Mexico registered the best final round score with a 20-under.
Max Homa of Cal, John Hurley of Texas A&M and Ben Kohles of Virginia finished in a three-way tie for first at 10-under but Kohles pulled off a six-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to claim the individual title.
Fresno State returns to action Feb. 28 - March 1 when the Bulldogs compete at the USC Invitational in Southern California.
