FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State football team stepped up to help fight hunger in December at the uDrove Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho, by bowling for beef. The Certified Angus Beef earned by the 2010 Fresno State football team was delivered today to the Fresno Poverello House by head coach Pat Hill and returning Bulldogs Travis Brown, Derek Carr and Robbie Rouse.
"The uDrove Humanitarian Bowl gave us an opportunity to give back to the community," said 14-year head coach Pat Hill. "It's great to be able to donate to the Poverello House to help them out; we know it will be used in the right way and take care of a lot of people.
"Community service is big for our athletes," continued Hill, "Since a lot of them are from the Valley it's great for them to be able to give back in the Valley."
The Bulldog football players bowled-off at Westy's Lanes in Boise to donate pounds of beef for every pin knocked down for a local hometown charity and a Boise organization. The Bulldog offense went against the NIU defense for 12 frames, and then switched to a defense vs. offense battle to close the friendly competition. All together, both teams donated over 2,000 pounds of beef to four charities.
Fresno State coaches and student-athletes put out their best efforts to strike against hunger and surpassed the Huskies total score of 361 with 367, and donated a total of 634 pounds of beef to the Fresno Poverello House and the Boise Rescue Mission, respectively.
It is no easy task to make a difference in someone's life; it's an even more challenging task to make a difference every day.
At the Fresno Poverello House they make a difference in the lives of those all over the San Joaquin Valley. Their mission:
"Believing in the dignity of every person, at Poverello House we work to enrich the lives and spirits of all who pass our way by stewarding the resources made available to us through Providential and community support."
The Fresno State football team made a significant contribution to an important charitable organization in the Central Valley. The donation was one of many key efforts made by Fresno State student-athletes to make a difference in the community.
"We don't receive a lot of beef donations, so that's what makes this so significant," said Director of Development, Kathryn Weakland. "In serving 1,300 meals a day we want to provide as much variety as we can. Our kitchen staff does a great job utilizing and buying only what they have to, and maximizing our limited resources."
The 42 cases of 634 pounds of Certified Angus Beef will be served as a warm meal to those in need on a chilly Fresno night. The Poverello House is always open for donations and the community answers the call. You can follow donation needs and requests from the Poverello House on their Twitter account name: @PoverelloHouse or by visiting www.poverellohouse.org.
"We Are Your Team" - The Fresno State football team is hard at work on and off the field and in the community.
