Dogs Lose to Cal Poly, 11-4

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team lost its first game of the 2011 season to Cal Poly. The Mustangs scored 11 runs on 11 hits winning 11-4. The Bulldogs (6-1) tallied six hits including a triple from senior Garrett Weber and a home run from Danny Muno. Weber went 2-for-4 with two RBIs on the night.
The Bulldog pitchers struck out nine Cal Poly batters.
The Mustangs capitalized on Bulldog errors in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, Cal Poly added three runs extending its lead to 4-0.
Weber blasted a triple to center field clearing the bases giving the Dogs two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Heading into the fourth inning the Bulldogs trailed Cal Poly 4-2.
Freshman Tyler Linehan made his second appearance and first start of the year. The lefty recorded career-high five strikeouts in a career-high 3.2 innings of work.
The Mustangs scored another two runs in the top of the fourth inning increasing their lead 6-2.
Muno hit a two-run home run over the right field wall in the bottom of the fourth inning bringing the Bulldogs within two runs of Cal Poly. Muno scored two runs against the Mustangs and broke the career run record previously held by Tom Goodwin and Steve Susdorf. This is the first of several records Muno will break by the end of the 2011 season.
J.D. Salles threw 1.2 innings of relief striking out one on Tuesday night.
Cal Poly added another run in the sixth inning extending its lead 7-4.
Junior Josh Poytress took over on the mound in the sixth inning. He struck out back-to-back batters to end the inning. Poytress recorded a total of three strikeouts.
The Mustangs tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh inning and their lead grew 9-4 over the Bulldogs.
Cal Poly won by a final score of 11-4.
The Bulldogs hit the road for a three-game series against UC Davis March 4-6 at Dobbins Complex.
Game Time Change
The Bulldogs game against CSU Bakersfield that was scheduled for March 9 has been moved to March 8 at 6:05 p.m.
"We Are Your Team!" The Bulldogs travel to UC Davis next weekend for a three game series against the Aggies. The Dogs return to Beiden Field for a midweek game against CSU Bakersfield on March 8 at 6:05 p.m.
